And yet every Man Utd fan you ask says otherwise and does not name Chelsea.

I was pointing out that rivalry is in a state of flux, were liverpool to disapear from view as regards the premiership title, I dont think united would consider you rivals, the enemy yes every day, hate you as a club, probably every waking minute.
But a rival is someone who is vying for something with you, and that would not/ has not been the case for a long time now.
Not here to argue lads, healthy debate is fine, but I think you guys are talking about hatred, not rivalry
Sandsend, your're right in the sense that we aren't in competition for the same goal, and that is one definition of rivalry, but that's not what a proper inter club rivalry is about. Man Utd are Chelsea's rivals for the league, that is true, but there is no actual club rivalry between the clubs. There has been between Man Utd and Liverpool for decades. If we become title challengers again in the next few years this rivalry will become even more heated.
We know that we're not challenging, but that's where the inter club rivalry becomes interesting, because regardless of where you are in the table, that game is still important for each team and each set of fans. The rivalry is based on history, or hatred, or a mutual respect and sometimes geopgraphy. The game goes beyond league positions and league rivalry. It wouldn't matter whether we were in the bottom half of the table at the time, it would still be a big game for both teams and both sets of fans.
Again I wouldn't expect Chelsea fans understand that though, as they don't have it. That's not a dig, you just don't. You might in a decade or two but you don't right now.
The first fixture I look for every season is Liverpool, not Chelsea. I obviously can't speak for every United supporter, but I suspect it would be the case for a majority of them.
And I wouldn't be looking for the Chelsea one until I found out when we're playing City.
I look for Everton first so I can provisionally book some holidays, then Utd after that Im not that bothered to be honest.

It certainly comes across as one but hey ho
Do you think Gary Neville considers you as a rival or someone to be despised, think on now, because I know for a fact that he hats Liverpool FC, i have witnessed him saying as much, I have seen him and another well known Rio in a club in London saying that if you were to go bankrupt following the H&G saga they would both die happy men, that isn't rivalry, it's pure hatred
In that case its a good case that he'll go to his grave a nasty bitter and twisted little man
SANDSEND 59 (U6325)
Just playing Devils Advocate here but is that hatred not a symtpom of rivalry. During his time at Utd we never really challenged Utd - it was their most dominant period arguably, so how does that work?
Sandsend59, exactly what Robbing Hood said. Where does that hatred come from? It comes from the decades of rivalry between the clubs. In the last 20 years we have only come 2nd a handful of times, so we've not challenged Man Utd, but that rivalry is still intact. And thats the difference between a club rivalry and a top 4 rivalry which is what you have with Man Utd.
Sorry lads, that hatred is so bad it must come from within, and where did Rio get it, he's from Peckham ffs.
One suspects the manager.
sandsend - you've answered your own question. If Rio is from Peckham his 'hatred' of Liverpool can only come from footballing terms - inherited when he moved to manchester, I'm sure he didn't hate Liverpool when he was at west ham.
"Rio Ferdinand, freshly linked with Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, has risked the displeasure of Manchester United fans by confessing to a previously undocumented respect for Liverpool's past stars.
Ferdinand told his club's official TV channel, MUTV: "As a kid, Liverpool were the team that were doing well, with the likes of John Barnes and John Aldridge, and United weren't really winning anything.
"On my estate [in Peckham, south London], all my mates were Liverpool fans."
There was a picture of him as a child wearing a Liverpool shirt on the internet a few years ago!
My comment is that there is health in rivalry, hence the term "A healthy rivalry". You will never read the phrase "A healthy hatred" for one reason, hatred and rivalry are diametrically opposed Rivals have a grudging respect, Neville et al hate you with a passion, and for the record, yes I agree, it's unhealthy
If the 'et al' is Rio then it only happened after he joined utd. I suppose it depends on your personality type whether or not you can succumb to hate. There's no love lost between Carragher and Neville but Carra's on record giving Neville respect for his footballing record. Can you hate someone and respect them at the same time?
It must be killing Neville to have to compliment Liverpool when he's commenting on them in his new job

Mate you can almost hear his heart break when Liverpool score, it would be great to have him and Thommo doing the Liverpool/United game, they would be rolling round the floor within 15 minutes
Did you see his face when Masch did an interview after the CL Final. Talking about Bulldog licking wee off a nettle
sandsend - it would be like that fanzone thing.
Knotty - saw the interview with Villa and Mascherano dedicating the win to Liverpool/Reina, didn't see Neville though...I try to avoid him tbh.
