I'd like to keep the toss but instead introduce the option for the losing skipper to make a change to his selection. For example if it's a green top wicket and the temperature is like 16 degrees then they could drop a middle order batsman and bring in another opener.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I like this idea a bit more than the coin toss one.
I don't know why people are kicking up a stink about the article though, I think the home conditions are really an issue in test cricket and are killing the game for people like me who isn't an avid cricket fan. I have no desire to watch England this series as the test outcome is so obvious.
Predictability and sport don't mix well.
Hoorah. A neutral with no agenda can comment, not agree necessarily with the article yet still make a valid point

Serial is the biggest imbecile on here, I have began to realise this as I begin to read more and more threads. It seems as though him and this A14 work together on threads.
Anyhow a 1 star article that stinks of sour grapes.
Oh god. Clefty has created a second account to try and back himself up
Of course he has, he now has to divide his support between Spurs and Liverpool. The guys got some talent.

The whole point of home cricket is that you are more used to your conditions and in order to win away you need to be able to overcome this disadvantage. Great teams are able to do so against the best sides. Simply letting the away side choose whether to bat or bowl first is like giving me a 90 metre head start against Usain Bolt. It turns the whole contest into a joke.
The toss is a huge advantage which takes little skill to win ( why it should be a 50/50 thing), whereas being able to adapt to the conditions takes skill.
Stupid article to say the least. You should be congratulating the opposition instead of trying to suggest unfair advantages for touring sides.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yet it's happening in County cricket... Yeah really stupid... Another imbecile enters the cricketing boards with a brilliant approach to discussion.

Serial
I've taken time to explain why I consider your point of view wrong yet you call me an imbecile for having a different opinion. This is the problem with some ja606 users, unfortunately you have a child like personality of throwing out insults if someone does not agree with you.
I have stated that the toss takes no skills to win, whilst accustoming to new conditions. It is my opinion you should only be able to win away test series against top sides, if you are a great side. Some may disagree with me but they are entitled to their opinion.
To simply give advantages which the touring side has not earned would be a detriment to the sport.
The concept is however a good one for the county game. It gives sides confidence winning games in conditions they are not used to and makes home teams have to work harder. However in Test Cricket you need to win in all conditions without any advantage being thrown your way. Most reasonable people understand this. No test victory should be given to you out of sympathy.
Dog,
Welcome to a sports forum where people air their views on this great game... however unpopular and controversial.... woof woof
A14,
He has every right to express sour grapes like I have every right to highlight it.
I don't care if you agree or disagree, SS.
You entered the conversation stating "stupid article", you "should be doing this" etc, so you can take advice from your own comments above.
Course he does and course you do- not denying that one bit... but what's this nonsense about working together on threads... you ought to read some of the disagreements I've had with serial to know we don't get on.... seems like you're a regular on here... multiple account going well??
Well, I can only go by the threads I have seen.
I'm not really a regular, joined a few years back and just started using it again.

I summed up my reasons and then stated at the end of my comment that it was a stupid article. Reason being is that whilst you are entitled to your views on this issue. Making an article about this matter just moments after you loose heavily does not give the side which just beat you enough respect.
India won't get my respect until they play a quality opposition out of their own conditions and win.
The best teams find ways to win.. I don't care about the toss. Of course be nice to produce wickets for the home team. I have been advocate for England producing result wickets to suit our bowlers..
England batted twice first so far in India.. England haven't been good enough to take advantaged..
The toss doesn't matter to me.
The biggest gripe is test pitches that don't offer nothing to the bowler..
Great Thread Serial
went down a treat
England don't do it unless the Aussies are in town for some reason?!
And yes completely agree England haven't been good enough. I said before this game that the only sniff of an England win would be batting first and they couldn't even take advantage of that.
Test cricket is in danger of going stale if test matches are foregone conclusions due to conditions.
My point was, should that be addressed or not?
To be fair had he made it not sound so bitter, I think it was a good topic but the way in which he put forward the argument just stunk of sour grapes.

You mean sparking debate and thoughts from decent posters apart from you and your other account?
Why don't you go back to the Video Games boards and start a conversation there
Please highlight any signs of bitterness?
Stating that all home sides do it and including England producing green seamers really sounds bitter doesn't it...
That's better Serial.
I agree with you to certain extent where home dominance for ALL nations needs to be addressed however what LWE says whereby test cricket is about testing yourself against all conditions holds more argument, in my opinion.
Serial they don't do it because of failing themselves with the bat..Ie if England end up being bowled out cheaply themselves..
That could have happened.if Australia had of won the toss at Nottingham rather than England last summer..
That's why I would pack our batting line up and have lower order batsmen who playing attacking shots.
200 could become 300 and your in the game..

"I know there will be people who say that is why it is historically tough to tour places like the sub continent for non sub continent teams and for Asian teams to play on green seamers, but is it time the balance was addressed?"
I made that point! It shouldn't be easy. I didn't even say that this IS the right approach, but its something to consider down at the ICC isn't it? We need changes otherwise test cricket will continue to be drowned out by the pyjama parties and Vuvuzelas at T20's!
The reality is that the toss has a big influence on results due to pitches in the subcontinent conditions. If you win the toss you are 80% likely not to lose
