Verratti

Great player but I'm a little bit divided on whether I want him, as it would probably signal the end for Fabregas, who hasn't really had a chance in this system to sign.

I honestly hope we don't bid over £40 million for him, as I don't think he is too much of a upgrade on Fabregas.

I would prefer us to go for Sanchez, as I see him as a definite improvement on Willian and Pedro. But I doubt that transfer is likely to happen though.

Lupin

To be honest, I wouldn't be worried about this supposed lowball bid. I doubt there's any truth in it, to be honest.

After Kante this was the player I wanted at Chelsea

Absolutely terrific player made for the premier league

If this happens in Jan we win the league would give us so many options

No point beating around the bush for this one, go straight for the throat.

PSG are not doing well this seaaon though. They were almost 15 points ahead of the 2nd place at this stage last season. Now they are third place, 4 points behind the leaders Nice.

Would PSG sell him in January? Who knows we've seen stranger things before !!!

He would be an upgrade on Matic. If we are selling Oscar in January, then we need to bring someone else in to fill the void. Verratti would be ideal replacement.

Thinking about it Man Utd are desperate for a player like him now.

We are, but we won't get him either. People are deluded if they think PSG will sell their best midfoelder in January.

£40 million is a lot of money for a luxury player. We don't really need him, we have great cover in midfield.

I would rather us spend that sort of money on a player for our forward line, or cover for our wingbacks.

I've seen enough this season to feel very satisfied with the squad. I love Verrati, but I just don't think we need him.

Luxury player ?

What are u on mate verratti is a hard working combatant ice midfielder who happens to be very technically gifted

I love fabregas but verratti would be an upgrade, and give our squad a lot of quality in midfield

We have also been linked with Bernardeschi, who seems like he could be a great addition for the squad as possible cover for Hazard and Pedro but also potentially Alonso too.

Looks fast, skilful, powerful and apparently has a very good work rate.

The only thing which puts me of is the £38 million price.

I call him luxury because he would be a transfer for a position we already are well covered in.

Verrati is better than Fabregas, but he really isn't a tremendous upgrade on him.

I'm happy with Matic, Kante, Fabregas and Kante. I think maybe money could be better spent elsewhere in our squad thats all.

Like I said I'm undecided on the transfer. £30 or even £40 million is a steal for him, but like I said I think that money could be used elsewhere.

Luxury signing is probably a better way of saying it. Though I wouldn't say it's really a luxury signing because he's better than all of Chelsea's midfielders. Nkt that it's going to happen. Would love to see him in the premier league, though.

Yeah, I do agree he is better than the rest of our midfielders, but I'm mainly hesitant because we haven't given Fabregas enough games in our current system yet. Looking for a replacement for him before we have really tried him out would be a little rash. Maybe come January, when we have seen more of Cesc we can make a bid.

There is though very little chance of this happening at all, so I don't think its worth our time worrying about it.

Wingbacks are desperately needed. I'm not fully convinced in Alonso, and I'm not too convinced in our cover either.

That's fair. I think the problem with Fabregas in this current formation is it demands a lot physically from the two central midfielders. I think that's why Conte has been hesitant to start home, though the same was happening before he switched formation so it may just be that he doesn't really fancy him in midfield.

Not really sure what Chelsea's budget is to really commment on whether the money used (not that you'll get Verratti but £30m for that area of the pitch) should be used elsewhere or whether you can strengthen multiple areas.

Agree about the wing backs. They're doing ok but I'm not convinced they're really long term solutions.

You are joking!!!

Outside of Kante and Matic, the next option is Fabregas (although we have played Oscar there) who has shown time and again not to be good enough against top quality opposition.

Don't forget Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel, Brummie.

To play CM in a 3-4-3 you need to have an engine on you. Fabregas wasn't exactly buzzing around the pitch for 90 minutes in his youth let alone now with his legs completely gone.

I've said before, his only future under Conte is potentially playing the Pirlo role in a 3-5-2. Unless he's surplus unfortunately. Great player who doesn't fit the mold, he's Conte's Mata.

I still think Conte could find a place for Fabregas in certain games. The lack of engine in that position is an issue I agree but there will be games where Chelsea will be so dominant that it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Especially with the amount of defensive players in the starting lineup - do you really need three cb's, two dm's and two wing backs in the starting 11 every game?

It could also be switch up to a 352, as you say, with Hazard or Pedro, depending on whether one is unavailable or not, being brought a bit more centrally to give more options through the middle, but still having Moses and Alonso retain width.

Possible Darren, he needs the protection to function!

posted on 16/12/16

Not really. The problem of Fabregas in this respect is that he doesn't offer protection in midfield, not that he needs protection to function. He needs time, space and movement to function. I think there are plenty of games in a season where he would get all three and it would be enough to justify not playing a midfielder, i.e, Matic, that offers that protection.

posted on 16/12/16

Or even Kante at times. As Matic and Fabregas have proven to be a good partnership in the midfle of the pitch. Kante and Fabregas haven't, though on paper it should work brilliantly. But you get my point? The options in midfield are still there to make use of Fabregas.

posted on 16/12/16

Time and space are two commodities that are hard to find against top PL side though Darren and the reason I feel he struggles!

posted on 16/12/16

I agree, which is why I wouldn't suggest him being the best option against such opposition. However, against many other sides in the league he'd get that time and time and space. Which is why I think he's still a very valuable player to Chelsea this season if utilised correctly.

posted on 17/12/16

My problem with the situation though, is that Kante and Matic are both similar players and more defensive.

I think Matic should be rotated with Kante and another partner for them who is more creative but more robust and capable of influencing a game more than Cesc!

Don't ask me who that player is though!
