No we let him go for free. He has spent 10.5 years with us. I think it's only fair, we owe him as much for being a loyal servant to the club.

Mikel
Caused plenty of frustration while he was here, but when you think about it that is mainly the managers fault for constantly selecting him. Tremendous servant to the club and was one of the XI in Munich
I can't believe he is still only 29!? Seems like he has been around forever.
Assuming that his wages are what 60-80k pw then we have still saved a decent sum between now and the end of July. Around what, £2m?
Forget the fee. Sorry but he has been a waste of a squad space. Not really bothered about how hes always come in to do a job when needed
We can get anyone to do that if that's all we need
Also the people that say he's never moaned about being left out the team, well of course he wouldn't moan, he's getting paid handsomely to do very little. In fact I'm highly sceptical as to why Mikel has kept getting contract after contract under Michael Emenalo's watch...
He is on £70k. I guess he was not going to play much this season, maybe an odd cup game, but yeah better than paying him whilst warming the bench

You and your conspiracy theory
I know Mikel is not everyone's cup of tea, but he had his use when was called upon. Good player don't like warming the bench or accept being squad players, when they can play regularly elsewhere. Squad players are as valuable as first team players and are necessity to any club that compete in top flights.
remember when we were fighting over him with Utd....
It's funny though, as we relied on Man Utd to do our scouting for us, it turns out their scout was fecking useless dork
Have the same feelings about Mikel leaving that I did about Torres. While I appreciate the effort from the players themselves, the truth is both of them held us back for many years. It's hard to pay tribute to a player knowing that, I do get Mr C's comments.
He did very well for himself, that's all that can really be said about Mikel.

Agreed. He got to play with some great midfielders like Lampard, Essien, Ballack and Makelele, he won every trophy he could have won at club level and he got paid handsomely for it.
Not surprising that it's taken such a long time to shift him, especially with our Director of Football being a fellow Nigerian.
I wish Mikel all the best and thank him for his efforts, especially in our CL win but at the same time I can't help but feel that his presence has blocked any talented young midfielders coming through. Thankfully we're starting to see that happen now with Chalobah.
Who can we talk about now though ! r

Couldn't disagree more. he should have paid us for the time that we kept him paying his wages for doing nothing.
Wish him the best going forward however.

If Mikel got 60,000 a week on average at his time at the club.
I work that out to be over £30,000,000 at his time at the club, not including bonuses etc.

Wonder what would have happened had Mikel gone to Man Utd instead as he so very nearly did before he came to Chelsea.
Seriously doubt he'd have been there for a decade like he has at Chelsea.
Not sure , he started his career as an attacking midfielder before Jose turned him into a defensive midfielder.
