"Clampdown" on internet piracy and sport

This is surely an unenforceable law.

The police have enough trouble as it is, without trying to deal with the thousands, probably millions, of people who stream content online.

My problem with this is the clampdown on pubs.

If Sky in particular weren't so greedy with their charge to pubs, I think less pubs would be looking at illegal alternatives.

So it looks like there is going to be e-mails sent to people who stream sports and other content over the internet

That's not really what the article says. It's not about streaming as such, more to do with P2P sharing.

If you're not downloading or sharing files for download such as torrenting, then it's not a worry. If you're simply streaming movies or football this won't affect you.

This had been in place in the us for a number of years now. I got a few emails from my provider about downloaded movies. The threat is that they will slow your internet speed. They never followed through as they can't show it was me who downloaded. Also, just use a VPN

What's put me off VPNs is that, whenever I have used one for work, they have slowed my machine down to a painful crawl.

Are non-work VPNs any better?

Dunno really. If I'm downloading music for instance, I generally do it overnight when it won't affect my broadband usage for other devices.

It's all about priorities. Poor people murdering poor people is one thing, but taking a few pennies out of rich people's pockets is beyond the pale.

What I do have an issue with is the invasion of privacy. As part of my new job I will be working from home sometimes and will be sending confidential information regarding clients. It appears that this information can be intercepted by my internet provider.

Funny, but probably not far off the mark!

The 'Investigatory Powers Act 2016' pretty much ensures the government (and around 40 other agencies) have full access to everyone's internet and browsing history.

My issue is that the premier league/sky charge a greater price for people in the uk to watch the premier league than anywhere else...? and they have greater access!

Talk about having us by the short and curlies... and obviously we already pay money into the game by the extortionate ticket prices and such issues that surround the game like policing, community issues etc.

If they made it as affordable and as accessible as other countries they might even make more money rather than people trying to watch pirated streams at 3pm on a saturday!

I read the article as downloading files to keep or watch later, not watching a live stream.

Internet laws are hard to enforce if you know your stuff. Waste of time really. Those that don't know the ins and outs generally download it legally, and those that do don't. So not going to make much difference

My understanding of that is that your ISP could still access that information, even if your browser is set to "in private browsing" like mine is. Just confirming on behalf of a friend

If you are just watching a live stream of a game or movie then thats not an issue. The problem is if you are downloading because generally to do that you'll use P2P software like bittorrent. This is where it gets into the copyright infringement.

So if your mate is just watching a game via kodi or at firstrow or something similar, then its no problem.
