I would expect WBA to play 2 banks of 4 which means we will need width and pace. We will also need Alli to take up that spot between the two banks as that's what causes so many problems.
I wouldn't be too surprised to see a back 3 with Walker and Rose spending most of their time in the opposition half.
Nice article Dev.
It is a great string to have in our bow, and is all down to the versatility we have across the squad.
All four senior centrebacks have experience in the fullback positions. All comfortable on the ball. Add the mobile CCV to the mix too.
For me (but not necessarily Poch) it should not be the default setting now though, as Sunday showed the limitations of the reserve fullbacks. They turn a 3421 in to a 5221, and six defensive players in the side. Walker and Rose are perfect for the roles.
For me, it is 4231 as default.
I agree with that point H, without the pace of Walker and Rose we are too defensively organised. Much as I like Trippier, his lack of pace will limit his opportunities
If 3421 is the default now, I feel we need to look at those wide positions, and who fills them in Rose and Walker's absence.
Davies should really be looked at as cover for Vertonghen rather than Rose. Said last season I would like to see him tried at CB, and his best position is probably on the left of a three.
Trippier I am still no be convinced of there. I think there is potential, but I do not see him as aggresive or direct enough at present. Against a carp side such as Watford he has cut it, but an organised Villa nullified him completely.
I think with a solid back three, plus Wanyama or Dier partnering Dembele, I feel it may be possible to look at Sissoko on the right. Depending on opposition, maybe even Nkoudou on the left.
I liked the 4141 we'd played a few times. Gives Eriksen more chance to play central and a little deeper to dictate more
Lloris
Walker Toby Verts Rose
Waynama
* Eriksen Alli Son
Kane
* this was normally Lamela so gives the opportunity for Sissoko to get a game
Good piece and agree completely on how Poch has developed the capabilities of the group throughout his tenure to date. Glad we handed an obviously highly capable coach the time and confidence to go about his work and do things his way.
Agree with Hengy above that I've also liked the look of the 4-1-4-1 at times, especially as it gets Eriksen involved a lot more in deeper areas and guarantees a quality supply forward and wide. But you have to have Son in the team for it to work out because we don't have anyone else capable of replacing Eriksen's shot volumes. And I also think Alli is better closer to Kane.
But its definitely good to have all these strings in our bow.
