Hope not, think this system suits us best. Away from home against a side whose strengths lay in their attack I want the Dembele/Wanyama brick wall in front of a 3 man central defence. Rose and walker will tear them a new arris hole and Dele, Eriksen & Kane are on fire.

This is a winnable game and would be a huge statement.

Out of interest, would anyone take a draw if offered now?

Yea I like the formation too but just have a feeling.

I wouldn't but I also don't think a draw is a bad result

I'd just replace Vertonghen with Davies - as we did against West Brom. It's the best like for like we have. Both can play left sided CB, and the reason the back 3 works is because they can all comfortably & naturally drop into the fullback position. Wimmer is a CB in a back 4, not CB/fullback in a back 3

The best like for like we have for Vertonghen is Wimmer who is similarly a CB who can play fullback. Not Davies who is a fullback who can play CB in a back 3 only

Davies has played CB many times in his career, Wimmer hasn't played fullback.

Wimmer is decent cover as a CB - not as a semi-permanent part of a back 3.

I think having Vert out won't make us weaker as Wimmer and Davies are perfectly good.

After the mauling City took last week if we can score first and early it will demoralise them and another good win will come. Lawro thinks 2-2, can't see it.

By stating that Wimmer has never played fullback, I'm assuming you missed our away match against Chelsea earlier this season?

He's also played at LB for Austria a fair few times - so please get your facts right

Davies has played at CB in a back 3, yes. But he's not more of a like for like than Wimmer, who is very similar to Jan, in that he is a left footed, ball playing CB - who has played at FB before too

posted on 20/1/17

Jan is a pretty competent leftback to be fair, wheareas Wimmer did just look like a centreback playing at leftback.

Left side of the three, I would go for Davies for that reason. I just feel he is better with the ball than Wimmer, and in that 3421, with Rose pushed up, it helps massively to have someone who can play fullback well. That he has played that position regularly for Wales is the cherry on the cake.

I so feel he is that bit more mobile than Wimmer too. Not as physically imposing as Wimmer, but City's forwards are small and nippy

It does not overly bother me which plays though if I am honest.

Answers to the questions:

Yes - a back three please
I think it plays to our strengths, and also exposes City's weaknesses.

No - I would not take a point if offered now.
A point or a defeat would leave us struggling to catch Chelsea. If we want to win this title we must be looking to win games against opposition in disarray, whoever it is. Chelsea went up there, did not play well and still won comfortably. Chelsea have Hull at home, a banker really. A win for us will give us a good platform to close that gap as they have Arsenal and Liverpool after

I would aswell, as Pep would've given his players a kick up the backside after Everton thrashed City 4-0. But with our recent form and beating them in our last 3 league games, there's a good chance we'll win. But we'll lose if Dier replaces Verts! Wimmer should replace him instead.

Dier is already a starter

I would definitely take a draw now if offered. They will be looking to make amends from their last game and are still a good side, especially at home. This is one our toughest games left alongside Liverpool, West Ham (seriously) and Arsenal

posted on 20/1/17

Won't make a difference how many we play at the back. City's defence is not equipped to deal with us. An early goal might swing it for them but I really think we're going to cause them huge problems regardless of formation.

I made an article a couple of years ago wanting us to play 3 at the back and I got 3 1 ratings for my effort

I'd like to keep 3 at the back but I fear it won't be as effective without Verts. Though I trust Wimmer to do a job, it is City away so one of the tougher games to throw him into.

Welcome back Chicken

Na I saw it, we lost 2-1 with their winning goal coming from our left fullback position

The issue was if Wimmer had ever played fullback - not if he had played it to a high standard

The issue was who is better placed to replace Vertonghen out of Wimmer or Davies, based on their suitability to the role. You then used the Chelsea game as your reasoning why Wimmer should play there - yet you unwittingly chose this game without considering the outcome, or how the defeating goal came about.

Wimmer is not good enough to play the left sided CB in a back 3 against this type of opposition.

Wrong

I questioned your statement that Wimmer had never played fullback before. That has zero credence as to how well he had played there, if he had. It merely said that he had never played there, which I proved to be incorrect

'Wimmer is not good enough to play the left sided CB in a back 3 against this type of opposition.'

That's your opinion. It's not shared by me, and nor do I believe it will be the opinion shared by our manager. We shall have to wait and see

He played well ( although scored an og ) v Arsenal and again got the call to play v Watford when Verts was suspended.
