Good article. Honestly I think you just faced Liverpool at the wrong time. They needed a win at all costs given their recent results and unfortunately for you, it was Spurs on the end of the siege.

It's choking season and right on cue Spurs are beginning to choke. St Totteringham's Day is coming very soon

we are not a bad team, but there are some very concerning basic issues which that game threw up

1. why did poch go into the game with those ridiculous tactics?

2. why didnt he change it when it was clear after 10 mins what was going to happen

3. no one on the pitch took any responsibility at all or even realised that we need to stop playing into their hands.

4. our defence looks an absolute mess

5. we have managed 1 goal in our last 3 games, a penalty at home to lowly middlesborough. no goals v Sunderland and Liverpool is not good enough for a "title chasing" side. both have poor defences.

6. our awful away record against our direct rivals continues. next season we are at Wembley and dont have our home form to bail us out. problems written all over it

Voice of reason Taxi, we are 2nd in the table after all.

While it was a very disappointing performance, everyone around us has had a similar setback lately - Chelsea beaten comfortably at ours for example. Arsenal lost at Chelsea and at home to Watford. City thumped at Everton. United drew at home to Hull. Liverpool themselves lost to Hull and Swansea.

Bear in mind, before Saturday's game the amount of points we have would have seen us top last season. Chelsea have been relentless, is all.

We have had by far the hardest set of games so far.

In the 6 games since the halfway point we have concluded proceedings against Chelsea, City, Liverpool and also West Brom. Of the remaining better sides we have already been to United, Arsenal and Everton and have them at home to come.

I did not expect a win up there, I fancied a point at most or a narrow defeat. That we lost and played badly means no more than if we lost narrowly and played well - it is gone now, we move on

I have an article about tactics, and countering what we faced on Saturday, but I will save it for tomorrow once everyone has changed their knickers

I think you were average yesterday but weren't terrible.

You were just on the end of an angry performance by us. We came out and took all of our pent up frustration and anger at recent results, anger at how they feel treated by some of the criticism the media have thrown at them during this run, and anger at the s*n.

When a talented team comes out with that level of intensity and aggression, I don't think many sides would cope tbh. Was a poor time to play us.

I thought it was a mixture of both.

Liverpool were very good, I take nothing away from them. Aggresive in approach and had the game's outstanding performer in Mane. On that sort of form at home, I would back you to beat most sides.

On the other hand we were flat. Poor individual performances from many, with some pretty basic errors to boot.

This, along with the way Poch approached the game, were all contributing factors to a completely dominant performance from the home side.

Tottenham like Liverpool if they ever wanna win the league they have find ways to win games that are difficult.
Tottenham were never going to win at Anfield..We are too good at home apart from the odd slip up.. Our home record in the last year and half is outstanding.
As ever we slip up in games we shouldn't,.

Both teams have to go to another level of consistency.

That's why I said you were average, you just seemed flat and given how we were it seemed worse than it was.

I do agree you weren't great, I don't think you were as bad as has been made out though.

No there were a lot of basic errors being made. It is one thing being flat - bereft of creativity, playing safe - and quite another to not do the basics right.

Several of ours fell in to the latter category.

I can see a few similarities between Spurs and Arsenal of the last 10 years or so.

One of those seems to be that teams in an awful run will tend to turn it around against us and as that's just a feeling you always tend to have, maybe those teams feel it too.

Good article Taxi

As I posted over the weekend, yes it was a disappointing display by the team, however its Monday and here we are still in 2nd place and will certainly be no lower than 3rd by tomorrow morning.

It was one defeat of 3 in the league this season, Chelsea have also lost 3 games, so like Taxi says lets have a bit of perspective in all this.

It was going to be tough this season, we knew that and we have responded well if not spectacularly.

I still fancy us to finish around where we are today and hopefully do well in one of the remaining cups.

Good article, measured responses from other posters.

This is all too civilised for this forum.

It didn't make nice viewing, listening, reading or whatever but it is hardly worth the witch-hunt conducted by many in the aftermath.

--------

its not a witch hunt, its an understandable reaction to a pathetic display, by both manager and players and people are merely addressing these issues.

correct me if I am wrong, but I haven't seen anyone call for poch's head, or for the players to be sold.... it was an awful game, but it was an all too familiar story in these big away games.

man u away, city away, and now Liverpool away where we simply haven't performed. the weekend's debarcle being the worst of the three.

Apart from a small minority throwing their toys out of the pram and the usual cussing and bleating the reaction to our disappointing performance at Liverpool by the majority of our fans, on ja at least, has been reasonable and thoughtful despite the frustration that such a display will provoke. Tactically and strategically we were out thought and out fought by opponents, who as we all expected, were totally up for the match and well motivated.

Poch has to accept most of the blame as he didn't send out the boys with the correct set up and mindset to deal with our deficiencies caused by the unavailability of Jan and Rose on the left of our defence. This was a more than obvious weak spot against the dangerous speed merchant Mane and the equally rapid attacking threat from Clyne. Leaving Davies so exposed was bafflingly naive and this issue correctly attracted the most criticism.

You have however got to give Klopp some credit for the way he identified and took advantage of what he was up against. Apart from the Davies situation the other key tactic was how quickly Wanyama and Dembele were closed down consistently throughout the match. They were like hyenas attacking a bigger but thoroughly confused prey and gave our midfield beasts a most uncomfortable afternoon one of the worst they have probably experienced in a very long time. There were other things that contributed to our defeat but these two were to me the most blatant drawbacks.

Your poor form has caught up with you.

Injuries and Europa will be a challenge.

Your delusion that you could challenge Chelsea is risible given that Europa has not started yet.

Liverpool played well. We played terribly. Poch made mistakes. In a few weeks this result will be forgotten if we continue the good form.
