Video Assistant Refs in England next season

Enough time to get some adverts in the Americanization of the beautiful game is here

I wonder if the referrals to the VAR will increase when players and coaches are aware it can be used. I can definitely see players surrounding the ref pleading for a video review.

Strange they would roll out the trial in the FA Cup and not something lesser like the league cup

Human mistakes is what makes football the spectacle that it is, whether the ref and lines men or the players or manger make it!

I accept mistakes are part of the game, but not to the extent I don't want them eliminated. Just concerned about the delays in the game and the potential for even more things reviewed further down the line.

It's the subjective calls that concern me. Everyone knows that one mans stonewall penalty is another's blantant dive

Don't get stupid logic like this. We should be happy if a donkey official gets an offside decision wrong and robbing that team of winning the league potentially or even going down?

If it can cut down diving then i am for it!

It's not going to be used for reviewing donkeys or offsides

Half the enjoyment of footy is derived from refereeing mistakes that either go for or against the team you support. Doing something like this sanitises the game a bit too much.

Wouldn't offsides come under 'goals'?

Actually I'm not sure. I've looked at that before and the only info given relates to examining 'infringements' leading to a goal.

Should that be interpreted as a handball goal like Sanchez the other week? Offsides? Shirt pulling at a corner? No idea really.

How far does the VAR look back? It's still a bit vague I believe

But if this happens then what are we allowed to complain about when United keep winning things?

This is from the Telegraph article:

Incident 5: 62nd minute

A Joshua Kimmich cross from the right is tapped home by Kevin Volland but is disallowed for offside. The video official agrees with the decision.

Referee decision: Upheld
-----
So I'm not sure how it would work if the linesman has called offside when a goal hasn't been scored and play is still going on. I guess these wouldn't be reviewed.

I agree with the above, though I think there are areas of the game where I think technology could be beneficial such as offside, as it isn't a subjective matter like other refereeing decisions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I'm with that. It's the subjective calls that'll be difficult

Sounds like a good idea to me (the FA, not 4za's ).

I disagree completely that wrong decisions are a key part of the game.

Sometimes you won't get a contentious decision in 25 minutes of football. Sometimes you can get up to 3 or 4 within the space of a few minutes.

I think it's an awful idea personally. Mistakes are part of the Game. Managers and players make them every single week. Refs can't be expected to be different.

3 or 4 goals, pens, red cards in a few mins?

Maybe once every 200 games.

It's hardly the norm.
