I think he is doing a classic Jose move and make a few excuses and talk his team down. The fixture list will be tough for United, but other clubs have faced similar schedules.
I remember during Chelsea's 2012/13 season, we won the europa league, reached the semi-final of the league cup and FA cup, and played in the World Club Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, whilst finishing 3rd in the league. Overall we played 69 games in total over the whole season, whereas United won't be playing as many games this season.
Our squad that season was pretty poor, and we had little cover in certain areas. United however do have some players who can regularly rotate. They will likely struggle with fatigue, but they do easily have enough quality in their squad to beat middlesborough this weekend.

Jose is hardky "throwing" 4th place, merely admitting MUFC aren't yet good enough. Considering the size of the club and finances at their disposal shouldn't he have got a bigger, better squad ? Always someone else's fault

Not really. He should have used this squad better than he has done.

That Chelsea team had a spine though. We dont.
Very few United fans can put down their best 11 and even the players they will likely choose aren't exactly the most consistent or talented.
We've spent a hell alot of money on alot of average.Hopefully Jose and ED change that while getting rid of this galactico style recruitment policy of signing 1 major star each window that seems to do more harm than good.
Very few United fans can put down their best 11
DDG
Valencia Rojo Jones ?
Carrick Pogba Herrera
Mik Zlatan Martial
I am only stuck on LB.
Shaw at LB for me, although i wouldnt be dissapointed at Blind.
Still think we have a ready made replacement for carrick in the dutchman
and i'd have Bailly at CB

explain where the average is?
would it be the back 4 that has the 3rd best defensive record in the PL?
would it be the front 3, one of which has 26 goals this season?

Your view of average and mine are two completely different things.
It is also a work in progress.
Try to be patient.
DDG-top class
Valencia- great work ethic but lacks offensive quality
Rojo- Good CB but lacks composure
Jones- Similiar to Rojo
Carrick -Still our most important midfielder but time is clearly catching up with him
Pogba- erratic
Herrera - Great work ethic but feel his offensive game has declined this season.
Mik- erratic and injury prone
Zlatan - arguably the only true top class player at the club
Martial -erratic and his mentality is up for debate.
not really "average" then
Comparable to the teams above us.

Hardly, the Chelsea had no spine at all.
Most of the old guard was past their peak, like Lampard and Terry, but both were regularly rotated. Ivanovic, Mata, Torres, Cahill and Luiz and Cole were probably the regular starters with experience, but few of them could be considered as excellent players.
We had just started a period of rebuilding, and it was only until we signed Costa, Fabregas and Matic, that we had a spine in the team.
Had it not been for a slow start to the season, then I would have expected United to be able to compete in cup competitions and be able to finish top four. Seems like now top four might be out of reach, and the best opportunity of qualifying will be winning the Europa League.
Mik- erratic and injury prone
...............
WTF?
He played 42, 46 and 52 games for Dortmund and has made 27 appearances for us, despite Jose not selecting him until October.
Do you just talk bollox for the fun of it?
And as for the erratic comment. It is nor even worth anything more than 'idiot'.
