I'm really not sure. We went through all this "he'll blitz the Championship" stuff when he first arrived, and I was one of those who supposed he just might do that. And in the end he did knock in a respectable number of goals.
But not before we'd all wrung our hands about how idle and unfit he seemed. I'd love to think he could really get into defences next season, but we'll just have to see.
All that said, and I know it's pointless to make these comparisons, but if Waggy was worth £3.5m then, yes, the Yak certainly is.
If he has the right one up front with him and he gets fit then yes, I for one think he will bang the goals in. Heskey anyone?
£3.5m is too much in my opinion. It will be good value if his goals fore us to the Prem, but I can't help but feel that a transfer fee that high plus no doubt high wages is a lot for a player I'd say was a "risk".
£1m and I would have been pleased. Hopefully the Yak will pay the fee back with his goals.
Despite my knocking his seemed lack of effort.
I am VERY VERY pleased if this comes off, there is quality in him and the threat of him in the box creates space.
A BRILLIANT addition .
1 goal in 2 is my prediction !
Seems like an awful lot of money to me, if it's confirmed.
Wonder what he will be paid? Let's hope Sven can keep him motivated.
I don't see why people are worried about the price. If Top's willing to spend it what's the problem?
Unless it means we can't now bid over £2 million for Naughton I'm not bothered about the price.
I do have reservations about him being our main striker, he showed glimpses of brilliance last season and then there were times when it was like having 10 men (and when Vassell and Ricardo were playing sometimes 8).
We've been linked with a lot worse players though that's for sure. If he can maintain some consistency (and I don't just mean with his tap ins he'll be a good signing)

Emilio - A couple of things bother me about the price: First of all, it could be money away from other areas (like your example of Naughton). Second, it creates expectation and will get people on his back a lot quicker if he's going through a barren spell.
Of course, he may or may not be the kind of the player who reacts to that and he obviously still has goalscoring pedigree. So I'd rather we spent less but I do think in this instance we'd be pretty sure of a return.
3.5 million is a bargain in todays terms of football expenditure. Look at that young lad who is going to Man utd for 19million or what ever it is.
Atleast with Yak, you know he is going to be lazy at times but you know he is going to back a good amount of goals.
Who would you rather have, Yakubu or Marlon King?
^
True. I'd choose the Yak any day.
Yep bring it on.....he can scores goals. It's not our money so why worry if it's too much? How much is too much? If you can afford buy it, what's relative terms anyway? it's all rather pointless to think of it as our money as it not as we don't own the club.
Of course we should be worried if it's too much, if it leaves us short of funds to strengthen the team as a whole. Neither do we want to go too far down the road that leads to financial ruin.
As we paid around £3million for Waghorn, then £3.5million for Yakubu seems a bargain. He maybe lazy, but he will score lots of goals. As opposed to Waghorn, who is full of energy, but would struggle to get 10 (another Iain Hume)
The thing though MG - Waggy is promising and at the start of his career whereas the Yak must be about 34 now and nearing the end of his.
Yes, but Yakubu will score 25+ goals next season, Waghorn won't. Those 25 goals may get us to the Premier League, where Waghorn certainly won't be good enough.
Yakubu is 28, 29 in November.
Waghorn is 22 in January.
For £500,000 more, we are getting an experienced player, that has played at the highest level in club and world football, and is still only in his 20's.
You really cannot compare Yakubu to Waghorn. It's obvious who is going to get more goal and give us a better chance of PL football next year.
I just hope that he is signing, and we aren't all getting our hopes up. :p
( this isnt a rant at anyone )
