He was reluctant to "go for it" because the team is off form and lacking confidence.
It is the first time in 2 decades that 3 at the back is the en vogue formation.
He is under immense pressure.

....and the players as well as we could see in their faces after the game.

Don't see how bringing on Walcott for Giroud would have made the team any less confident. It could have helped stretch Middlesborough's defence and given Alexis and Ozil forward option. For most of tthe match, Giroud was in that statue mode when the ball just bounces off him all game.

which is the point. if he is so assured abt his contract why is he under pressure? whether he has signed on and we finsh badly his position is untennable. if he hasn't signed he is not going to be offered one if we finsh badly. either way it all goes back to the contract which has defintly contributed to the lack of confidence in the dressing room. believe it or not players who do want to go if wenger is not there next season are probably making plans. obviously wenger wants to stay or he wouldn't be under pressure, would he? he cares. but that doesn't men nowt now that fans have turned and the players aren't responding to him.

Doesnt really make sense taking off Giroud for Walcott who is five foot nothing against a side whos biggest threat was the aerial route from free kicks and corners.

Because he wants to win games, wants CL football and wants success.

Glimpses of good play tonight. Hard to be more positive, as mid are pretty terrible. But we still look like any team half decent team could batter us. Really need the team to work hard so we don't get embarrassed by city

Found that the first half was okay. Players had to adjust the new formation. Second half we were punished immediately with the first mistake that began with Sanchez losing the ball.
Then you could see a litte bit of panic got to the players again. This game was about to bring the win over the line.

It makes sense if you are playing well and in decent form which clearly Arsenal are not in. When your playing badly you need to take every advantage, imagine if they had conceded and equalizer from a set piece and Walcott is the one who gets beaten by one of their six foot defenders. The critics would be lining up to stick the knife in again.
the only reason why wenger is under pressure is because the decision on his contract will be at the end of season LIKE HE SAYS. and it looks more likely his position is untennable. which was my point on any contract offer that was reported as on the table earlier in the season as not being there now!
