Dpl v Wycombe

We don't have a good a record there, in fact a rather bad one, possibly 100% unsuccessful, but here is a chance to put it right. I've never been to the town before, but High Wycombe and football hardly seem to go together. But they have the archetypal lower league forward in Akinfenwa who did we not have at Belle Vue in DP's time and he would not move north so he went back to London - all those years ago?

So time to start to even things up with 3-0 to us - Marquis and 3975 there.

Looking forward to seeing Copps and Mandeville back in action...

Come on Rovers

We've usually bounced back from a loss, but I do not think we will do a Grimsby. I'll go with 2-0 to the Rovers with Copps scoring if he starts or otherwise Marquis, Crowd 3927

Poor defending, fundamental marking erorrsled to both goals. Some imaginative attacking produced the wonder goal and several near misses in the first half. After May's injury, the edge went with Copps off his game and little imagination elsewhere.

They were second best in the 2nd half and deserved nothing more.

Rovers had 49% of the possession, 14 shots with 7 on target and one goal. They had 51% of the possession with 7 shots of which 2 were on target and two goals. We are still two points clear at the top as, yet again, other results helped. Exeter will be tough but Hartlepool may already be done for. Two wins and the top spot is ours. At the start of the season we would have been delighted with that.

Player apathy or poor team selection?

Statistics,damned statistics.

I'm afraid that on this occasion they flatter us.

Previous posts were made “on the move”.
There were very few things to admire beyond May’s industry and ATS’s satisfactory re-introduction.
Although it is not admirable to criticise, I cannot help getting irritated at Mason who gets involved enough to get on the ball, but the negative things he does with it and his unnecessary fouls make him a worrying component of the team.
Rowe had a non-game and his usual flair was sorely missed and there was no Copps to construct attacks. He was there, but he omitted to bring his usual game along.
Grant evaporated into a midfield void and Butler and Baudry got angry and it did not help.
McSheffery “replaced” May, but that is about all; productivity was low.
Marquis was active as always and I won’t criticise him, an inevitable target for close marking now.
Akinfenwa is like a character from a video game and the plan to deal with him may have worked in part, but it left the rest of the team free to roam.

Akinfenwa. Without him they'd be in bottom 5.
Thing what got me was, he was aloud to foul anyone near him and get away with it all game. Yet if Butler or Baudry beat him to a header it was an instant foul.
Another thing that winds me up, what exactly does Mason bring to the team. Yet again ball watching as their players ran past him to score .

BVZ: Interesting that you feel the same about Mason; perhaps his game only needs tweaking, but I worry about the quality of the defensive coaching now. We concede when we are back in numbers. We fail in basic marking.

On Akinfenwa, he can nudge players legally and they go reeling down because of his massive balanced bulk. He is difficult to referee because in the challenge players sort of bounce off him and it looks illegal to us. It is sometimes, but not always, but he is entitled as any player to use his weight. As DF says he can be unplayable "at this level" which is another way of saying that L2 defenders don't have the skill to deal with him. And that brings us back to our fundamental defensive shortcomings.

Can someone tell me that the defensive formation is the problem or is it as it seems to me, failures to mark, tackle and dispossess the opposing attack?

None of us could have enjoyed Saturday and conceding 50 goals in this League equates with at least 60 in the one above.

OK so these are stats and I disparaged them earlier, but we cannot expect to rise above the pack next season if we let in 60.

Only one team in the top half of L1 (Bristol Rovers) has conceded over 60 and apart from the bottom 4, only 4 others.

The fact is that without Marquis we would not be where we are.

We need about 5 players for next season minimum.

Left back, Right back, Centre half, Central midfielder and a striker.

I have every faith in Fergie to get those players and quality ones too.

To be shown the door has to be Etheridge, Taylor-sinclair, Williams, Keegan, Evina. They'll all be on some decent wages I'd have thought so it will free things up. Also I hope we don't offer Mason a contract not impressed with him most of the season. Don you summed his performance up perfectly
