Biggish have you ever gambled in the past?

I have, and it started to spiral a bit out of control before i put a stop to it. Many other people cant do this. I'm one of the lucky ones.

not gambling, but i am an ex professional currency trader and i did some personal account trading and that got out of control for a while.

I still trade currency ETFs and had some 100/1 leveraged CFDs during the greek crisis. Was it the overnight stuff you done professionally?

I myself had a very very bad time with FOBTs a few years back. I was living in London and with there being dozens of bookies near each other I worked out that with each having 4 machines in each I could go in and make say, £3/4 on each machine and just spend the whole day taking the bus around the local area it would all add up. A kind of hit and run and it worked to an extent. Some days I would make £200 and I even as shameful as it was, I quit my job. But then the big problem would be that my ego (the same as every gambler) got in the way. I would go in with the aim of making a small amount and most of the time I would. But then if I quickly lost £5 it would turn into £10, £15 etc and then before I knew it I'd have put in not only all the winnings trying to 'simply' find myself £3/4 up but instead I'd lose £500.

Money became just pieces of paper to me. I'd put in £20 every few seconds as if it were nothing and it really screwed my way of thinking for a long time.

The worst thing about those FOBTs is that you can put so much money in in a short amount of time. And you can win on them. But there is no safety net on the inevitable ego-money chase that happens when you lose. It's a bottomless pit of note inserting.

Back when I was deep in the world of using those machines I'd curse any government attempt to stop the use of these machines as I was deluded enough to think I'd make thousands off them. But now I'd gladly march to the steps of parliament to have them all taken away.

I'd ban it too. Simply because the house always wins, and anybody who's good at it gets banned.

The adverts are bloody everywhere, it's actually a joke whilst watching a game on the box. This in of itself should show how much these companies are making off gamblers and put people off, but you've got Chris Kamara whoooooring himself out and that cockney waaaaanker doing it too.

He's right on. Gambling has never got anyone anything. The ones that do get their money taken away for some pathetic excuse. It's just the greatest scam of all times and somehow people think it's great

The gambler himself is not immoral but the way bookies, drug dealers and alcohol serving companies take advantage of vulnerable people is disgusting. For advertising for Betting and alcohol should be banned

The markets are very different animals theses days and their behaviours driven by other factors....so much aglorithm trading now....it did not really exist in my day.

I think that is why I lost money trading a personal account in modern day markets and it got really messy for a while...on that level it was exactly the same as pumping money into bets and you then chase your losses...luckily i stopped, i got badly damaged, but it was not fatal.

So basically Biggish, even if you had access to a similar book to the one Biff steals in Back To The Future 2 it wouldn't do you much good

I spent a bit time as a consultant fixing algorithmic trading platforms and algos back in 2008. Worked on establishing intra bank trading of CDS just before it blew up.

Gambling is a sickness. Common sense. You will lose more than you will win.
