I too had Kov up by a round going into the 8th.
But Kov was already looking tired, and after that right from Ward in the final round, was totally gassed.
He was only gonna get KO'd or beat up over the final 4 rounds had it continued.
It should have continued though as it wasn't a conclusive stoppage by any means.

The stoppage robbed Ward of a decisive win and it now gives team Kovalev and his fans a way out.

Paulie calling the ref's stoppage very questionable:

Ward v Bellew of all a sudden is a possibility.
Ward shouldn't even entertain fighting Adonis as Ward albeit controversially, has done Adonis's job for him "twice".
Also Smith lost

Tony Weeks is an idiot.
Ward looked much stronger in this fight that in the previous one. He looked like he suited the weight much more. It's a pity he's just defeated the only real competition in the division.

There's so much wrong with that stoppage. If anything the ref should be warning Ward for low blows and if not there should be a standing count for Kovalev. Inexusably bad refereeing. As I said before that's Vegas for you. Glad I didn't stay up for this.
It was an early stoppage but Kovalev wasn't exactly defending himself, and was seriously gassed by that point.
He'd already turned his back to Ward in the previous round and was breathing very heavily in between rounds for a couple previous.
He was gonna get stopped, just a shame we weren't allowed to see it.
To be fair, assuming it was repeated low blows, I doubt many men would be defending themselves at that point.
And I'm pretty sure the reason he turned his back in the previous round was due another low blow that wasn't called by the referee.
I kind of understand it, though. Ward had alreasy been warned for low blows, so the next one the ref called up would probably have been a point deduction, and that would have been controversial as well.
He'd stopped defending himself before the final three punched though.
He just ducked with his hands low, against the ropes. Wasn't trying to initiate a clinch or block anything. He was on the brink of going as he'd given up.
Probably because he'd just been punched repeatedly in the nuts.
As I said.. prior to the three punches Ward landed.
