If Paul Scholes was so good...

1) why did he never win Utd Player of the Year?

he was so good at passing he assisted his team mates year in year out

2) why did Fergie drop him for the 09 CL final? (Anderson and Giggs started)

I believe his reasoning was going for more mobility in midfield, we werent expecting to be the ones dictating the play (xavi, iniesta and busquets were the best midfield in the world by some distance at that time)

1) why did he never win Utd Player of the Year?

Remember that photograph of his shriveled white willy poking out his shorts. People can't get an image like that out of their minds, once you've seen that you couldn't look him in the eye never mind vote for him.

2) why did Fergie drop him for the 09 CL final? (Anderson and Giggs started)

Fergie seen the pic the night before that game and was mortified, couldn't face watching him.

3) why did he never make the World XI? (unlike Lampard/Gerrard multiple times)

His willy.

4) why did he never come close to a Ballon D'or podium finish? (unlike Lampard/Gerrard)

Ginger with a really small willy

^and this was a player famed for his reputation among peers. I suppose actions speak louder than words

5) why did he only make PL Team of the Season twice in 20 years? (Alli has the same already)

No one votes for gingers to win anything, especially ones with really small willys.

6) why was he never the players, journalists, or fans Player of the Season?

Too ginger and too small a willy.

"he was so good at passing he assisted his team mates year in year out"

This is a funny one. Not the assists themselves but the passes leading to assists, he amazing for.

Watch back any of the old United videos from our glory years and he is involved in almost every attack. He put it on a plate for wingers or attackers to make that final scoring pass.

In all seriousness, his personality made a difference too. Easy excuse, but how many of the worlds best are shy and avoid sponsors and interviews?

1) He was somewhat underrated in the early part of his career, and also probably not utilised to the best of his strengths in a 4-4-2 / English football as it was. He'd have been more appreciated and better utilised in Italy or Spain.

2) By 2009 his legs were pretty much gone. His last great season was 2006-7. His 2007-8 was really good but with the slowing down starting to show.

3,4,5,6) Quiet efficiency and controlling the tempo rarely gets noticed as much as bursting through and scoring goals. Scholes might have been shortlisted and won things if his best seasons as an attacking midfielder and goal scorer had coincided with United winning the CL.

Perhaps he has been a little overrated in latter years. Perhaps he could have had a still greater impact on the game if he had had the forceful personality of Keane or the ebullience of Beckham. But one thing is for sure: he was a much more gifted footballer than Lampard and Gerrard.

I guess that makes Djimi Traore better than Ledley King

You're comparing Clarence Seedorf to Djimi Traore? The point is Seedorf was considered an elite midfielder throughout his career whereas Scholes' reputation as an elite midfielder has come post-retirement. He was never considered on the same level as Keane/Vieira

I often asked these questions. I'm often told because he was the shy retiring type he didn't get the hype he deserved. They refer to his peers etc even though it was his peers who voted these other players ahead of him for the individual awards.

The simple fact is that he was a great player but not as good as the likes of Gerrard and Lampard who were always voted ahead of him but since his retirement he has been elevated to legend status, helped by the fact that United were struggling in midfield, Fergie brought him out of retirement and he was able to do a good job keeping the ball moving and spreading the play from deep, not much else due to his obvious limitations at that time.

It's interesting to point out that Scholes scored more than either Lampard and Gerrard in any one league season if you discount pens.
