ioag, that’s grim reading but not totally surprising. It’s strange when you think about these people really, we talk about them and treat them in quite an abhorrent way, a way I suspect most wouldn’t about the average person they know or don’t even know.

I can imagine social media is causing a lot more issues for many that weren’t there previously. Obviously it’s bad getting abused in the stadium or whatever, but to then go home and read all the comments about you most be soul destroying for some of these young lads.

Yes, that's a crucial point. Social media is sure to have had a major impact for the reasons you describe. Suicide rates among teenagers and young adults have also gone through the roof since the advent of smart phones.

Speaking to a school mum the other day, she observed how in the old days kids would be able to disconnect more easily from whatever social stresses they might be enduring at school, whereas nowadays kids stay connected via the social media apps on their mobile phones at all hours.

It's a silent pandemic that as of yet we, as a society, have no idea of how to handle. Social media companies are fully aware of it too, but the profit motive is too powerful for them to be willing to take any meaningful action that might seriously impact their bottom lines.
