La Liga/Serie A season 2024-25

You think he’s more athletic? I think he’s better mainly cos he can dribble but I always thought athleticism was Dele’s strongest attribute

posted on 15/7/24

Yeah I do. He’s not as technically good either. But I don’t think he’s nearly as good at finding space in the box like Alli was and can’t finish like Alli could at his best.

Yeah he was so good in the box

I’ve always found Kane’s positioning when it comes to crosses kind of odd. He prefers back post or cut backs (as shown when he was nowhere for that Saka cross right in front of the goal). Obviously it works cos he scores so many goals but I often find myself questioning his choices.

Also is he the only player to have the WC and Euros Golden boot? (I’ve done no research)

Gerd Müller as well (who won it outright)

You’d probably know better than me, but do you think that’s an age thing? He’s clearly not as sharp with his movements as he used to be, and doesn’t look like he goes to the front post that much nowadays.

I think David Villa was top scorer at Euro 2008 and 2010 world cup. But not sure if anyone has done that.

I think it’s more a thing that he drops deeper to play that pass to the winger so naturally is just far away in the box. I think age is a thing too and I think he realised he can score just as many with his positioning as it is than busting a gut every time.

Yeah Villa too - but back then they didn’t give the trophy to tied top scorers. But yeh, Müller, Villa and Kane.

I agree with the positioning bit, but the main issue isn't Kane's dropping deep, it's just that he's slowed down a lot. Benzema always dropped deep to speed up transitions, but even at 35 he was still much faster than Kane is now.

The Bellingham comparison with Delle Ali is true
2nd half of last season his performances for Madrid were in the main poor...salvaged by scoring important goals in big matches

I hope the coaching staff at Madrid develop him and iron out his flaws...he's still a v young player that should improve with good coaching

It's hard to tell exactly why Bellingham's form dropped off so much in the second half of the season. Part of it was probably the loss of the surprise element of his deployment so far up the pitch, which nobody had really expected. It might also be true that he has gotten too big for his boots very quickly, but I haven't seen that in how he's played for us.

The Madrid crowd were ecstatic at the start, and have been more forgiving than usual in the latter part of the season because he could still be seen to putting in the hard miles.

I agree that the coaching staff still have a lot of work to do with him and that he hasn't hit his ceiling by any means, but I'm hopeful. And if his work ethic isn't what it should be, you can be sure the fans will be quick to let him know. At Madrid, no one, ever, is above the team.

UEFA's Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament: Mike Maignan (France); Kyle Walker (England), Manuel Akanji (Switzerland), William Saliba (France), Marc Cucurella (Spain); Daniel Olmo (Spain), Rodri (Spain), Fabian Ruiz (Spain); Lamine Yamal (Spain), Jamal Musiala (Germany), Nico Williams (Spain)

No real controversy there

Probably Walker but I understand them thinking they had to shoehorn an England player in there. I’d have selected Pickford personally

I don’t think he was ever really quick enough to catch up with him dropping deep (he has slowed down & was even slower this tournament with his injured back). Also more an observation of ignorance and not watching nearly enough Benzema - but I don’t feel he dropped deep the same way Kane did.

Kane always dropped deep to play the killer final ball or pass before the final ball - whereas Benzema dropped deep to continue knitting play together nicely. Easier to keep up with play when passing 5 to 10 yards as opposed to 15 to 20.

I didn’t think Walker was that good this tournament. But can’t think of a standout right back really. I’d have gone with Pickford as well.

But it’s always difficult choosing a team of the tournament when players don’t play the same amount of games.

Typical allowance for PL darlings. Rodri and Saliba probably the only ones who were actually good. Stones was better than Akanji, whose main contribution was to put England into the semis, and Pickford could have got the token Englishman nod ahead of Walker.

I'd have liked to see Mikautadze in there. A few penalties but considering its Georgia's first tournament and he scored 3 goals it would be nice to honour their contribution.
