Have you ever actually seen him play or are you just guessing? His pace, strength and general athleticism has been credited more than his ball playing ability
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I only saw him maybe 4 times in the Europa league, what I saw he looked good on the ball and very comfortable but seemed a little shaky defensively at times. I'm sure he'll be a good signing in time, he's very young though and it wouldn't surprise me to see Dier play most of the season in the back 3 while Sanchez bedded in.

Why do people keep saying he's a ball playing centre half? Is it just because he plays for Ajax?
I've only seen him 3 times, twice just randomly watching Ajax and once in the Europa League final against us.
He's definitely not a 'ball playing' CB in he style of Pique, or similar.
He's very very fast for a central defender, and strong/athletic, this meant that any mistakes he made or lapses in concentration were often easily recovered from because of his pace. He had a well timed tackle too, if a little rash at time or over eager.
In terms of ball playing, he wasn't good. Jose actually said they'd watched a lot of Ajax in the build up and we targeted him, we knew Ajax liked to play out from the back, and we pressed high to stop most players, but when he had the ball we sat off and marked all his options, which usually lead to him kicking it out of play, passing it to our players, or trying to dribble and losing it.
Wonder if people actually watch players before talking on here sometimes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is his FourFourTwo rating. Perhaps he just had an off day?
Davinson Sanchez: 6
Was unfortunate to deflect Pogba's shot past Onana for the opener. Strong as ever in the personal duels, but uncharacteristically sloppy on the ball.

For some reason people are forgetting that we can play 4 at the back too. So if one or two CBs get injured we don't need loads of cover to play with 3 still

Maybe then, as I said I haven't seen much but he didn't look as natural or comfortable on the ball as his 17 year old CB partner that game, who definitely looked one for the future.
I'm not saying he was Smalling level bad on the ball, but not a proper ball player.
His pace and athleticism will be brilliant attributes when you do play a back 3 though.

With the limited numbers and experience we have across the 6 defensive positions if Foyth is in for Wimmer (CB, FB, DM) I think it is certain we will play a back 4 at points, although the 3 will be the default. It may well suit us to play 4231 or 4141 at points anyway.
I wonder if Poch has an eye on tinkering with things a little regarding the back three when we have Davies and/or Trippier playing
More emphasis on the outside CBs getting up the pitch on the overlap. Jan a natural. This Sanchez lad looking to be rapid. The fullbacks playing a more reserved tucked-oin role.

42 mil is a lot for a guy who moved for 3.6 mil 12 months ago.
He looks a talent and is a fantastic ball playing centre half, but I think from a defensive standpoint he needs some work. However he is coming into one of the top defensive units in the league so I'm sure he will learn a lot and develop.

Yea still a awful league
He is still really young for a CB, impressionable and mouldable. Plenty of attributes hopefully for Poch to work with. The Ajax connection with Jan and Toby is a plus, also the fact Poch speaks his native tongue. Expecting good things over the next few seasons.
No CCV this season again then?
