I agree Ace, the 1000 goals is terribly over rated in my opinion when you are playing in the Brazilian league for your whole career.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Haha to to anybody scoring 1000 goals in any level of football tbh.
When pele was playing, South Americans didn't come to Europe often. He did it at every level he could and there is a reason every professional in the game lists him in their top 5. He was part of a revolution of football.
Messi nearly carried an average Argentina team to the World Cup 3 years ago. Aguero was injured iirc and Higs bottled it in big games. It was only really Messi they had and he came so close.
Busby , like I said with a name like Busby, I take itbyoi are pretty old ? Which means you will be biased on players like Pele. Lionel Messi record in an extremely strong European league aswell as in the CL speaks for itself. Pele record was literally in a Brazilian league his whole career.
I'll give you Messi is a more prolific goalscorer, but Maradona was a magician with the ball, pure joy to watch
Huge problems in comparing eras anyway. Different philosophies in the game, different standards of facilities and equipment, different levels of sports science and fitness etc
In today's game pele would never have stayed in Brazil, Maradona would never have had a drug problem and Best would never of had a drink problem.
Back then Ronaldo wouldnt have had the science and facilities to be the beast he is and Messi wouldn't of had the refs protection. Not to mention the pitches etc.
Impossible really, you can only judge a player by their generation.
Maradona could do things with a football, that Messi could only dream of.
Im sure even he would laugh at being told he was better than Diego Maradona."
Oh give it up mate. What could Maradonna do with the football that Messi can't ? Messi can beat players like Matadomms could. Messi has unbelievable close ball control like Diego did. Messi scores so much more goals than Maradonna ever did. Please enlighten me mate?

And i take it you have only ever seen Messi play yet feel you can compare him to maradona, best and pele?
I'm 28 btw But a student of the game
Yes I have only seen Messi play and that's why at the start I said I am probably biased but his record speaks for itself and Maradonnas in Europe doesn't even come close.

Sandy , your going to be biased because of your age mate. The Brazilian league is awful mate. It might produce individual brilliant players and still does not the standard is terrible. No way in a million years would Pele of scored 1000 goals in Europe sorry mate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don, Without being unkind, you only seem to think football was invented in the last 20 years. The Brazilian league knocked spots of the European leagues back in the day. All the top Brazilians never played in the European leagues, they were happy to all stay and play in the stronger South American leagues. Very arrogant of you to suppose football begins and ends with European football, when clearly South American countries have won lots of world cups and world club championships.
And as has been said already, the likes of Best and Maradona were ruthlessly hacked during games sometimes in coordinated attacks, Messi at least has the protection of the refs to show his qualities

Well said mate. the problem with the modern fans, is they have been brainwashed into thinking a two team league in Spain with cannon fodder for opposition most weeks is stronger than any league Pele ever played in.
I'm sorry sandy but scoring 1000 goals in a career just goes to show what a low standard league the Brazilian league is/was back in the day and even now. Would you class the brazillian league now as good standard? So why back in your day was it so spectacular. You can't just pull out " this international team we're great " and use that as a basis to judge a whole league. Pele would of never had that record in Europe sorry.
Messi gets so much disrespect. The fact he consistently scores 50 goals a season has worked against him as people don't seem to think it's as incredible as it is since they're so used to it. Before Messi no one even thought it was possible to score like he and Ronaldo do. They've both reached a level that never existed before.

The same applies to Pele in a weak Brazilian league mate. I think his 1000 goals pretty much proved the standard was pretty low in that league mate. If you are saying Messi is playing rubbish every week, then why can't it apply to Pele ? When it has been proved that the South American club leagues are pretty poor.
For what it is worth, I think Messi is up there with the top half a dozen players I have ever seen play. But he is nowhere near the best. At International level he has never really been able to turn it on like Pele could at the top table.

It's an amazing achievement, I just wonder how many they might be getting if defenders were allowed to defend
Nowadays you can't look at an opposition player in the box without fear of giving a penalty away, you must take these things into consideration
That I agree with sandy. Messi hasn't been able to turn
It on for Argentina but his club career is outstanding.

Jlou, your point ? Messi can do all that. Not denying Maradonna wasn't class but to label Mara Donna miles ahead of Messi is pretty laughable. In fact it's ridiculous.

Don, it was good back in the day, because the entire Brazilian team that more or less dominated world football for a dozen years or more, all played their entire careers in it.
The current Brazilian league now may not be up to much, but then the current Brazilian International team is pretty pony, and in no way is comparable to the great Brazilian International teams of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
Ok sandy fair enough. I personally think Messi is on another planet to anything but that's me being biased as a young guy that's never seen football back in your day
Maradonna was obviously superb but some on here saying he is miles ahead of Messi I just can't take seriously.
Pele's real goal tally is nearer to 650, which you'd expect both Messi and Ronaldo to pass.
Messi the most gifted, but Ronaldo could be considered the most accomplished imo
