Ashes watch: The only player to focus on at the moment is Stoneman who's 72* against Yorkshire at lunch with Burns 50*, who based on our current rate of going through openers could find himself in the starting XI for the India series next summer.
Thanks for the update. Stoneman looks very likely to go on the tour.

I think they'll go with Stoneman at 2, Ballance or Westley for 3 and keep Root 4 and Malan 5. Hameed will miss out, he's young and hasn't played for England in a while. While they'll take Hales, as replacement to open or go in the middle order. Rest of side picks it self, they'll opt for Woakes for TRJ at 9 for the batting depth on batting pitches.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's a weird thought process though. On batting pitches you expect your batters to be able to make the runs. Taking 20 wickets is the key. To be fair, Woakes has been fantastic for us the last 12 months but he needs to find the extra 3-4 mph he was bowling at before his injury. We need someone who is regularly bowling at 85 plus with Jimmy and Broad.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree, if we lose matches on flat decks because our batters fail and we are reliant on our lower order bailing us out then quite frankly we deserve to lose.
We've only really got Wood and Stokes as our quick bowlers but I don't think we should underestimate Roland-Jones, his accurate line and length bowling along with his height is similar to that of McGrath. He's obviously not on McGrath's level but his style could cause the Aussies a few problems.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yeah but we have to rely on them until the 3 and 5 positions are sorted otherwise i agree with you. Also Woakes on his day is as good a bowler as TRJ.

Unfortunately I agree with you and do worry that our batters could let us down on batting paradises. We do need to back them though as we're trying to bring in 3 new faces rather than 1.
Burns has just gone but Stoneman brings up his century. He was surely already going but it will be good for his confidence to keep scoring runs as bowlers will definitely see his wicket has a bigger scalp. Woakes is now out there batting for Warwickshire at 6.
Woakes gone for 22 but he'll enjoy bowling more on this pitch by the looks of things. Could be tough for Westley when he gets his chance to bat as the pitch is spinning too and Warwickshire have Jeetan Patel in their ranks.

The selectors have probably already decided on the bulk of the touring party but there may be 1 or 2 who are fighting it out for a place. The likes of Hales, Malan, Ballance, Hameed, Westley, even Duckett are probably being talked about for positions 3, 5 and reserve batsman. With a few games left, they can try and make it as difficult as possible for the selectors not to include them.
It's not ideal that it has to matter at this time but with the problems we have at the top of the order, there's a lot of attention on the potential batsmen who could make the squad so scoring runs under that pressure could give them an edge over another player for one of those spots.
Cook isn't playing for Essex today, rested
I know Hameed's form this season has been patchy but he is a player that should really be in the England squad. To display temperament like he did in the subcontinent in his very first tour at 19 was far beyond his years. No idea why he wasn't at least given a chance against the Windies at least. I watched a bit of Westley this summer and he doesn't convince me tbh. Decent enough technique but quite a slow scorer and not sure he has what it takes. The only issue for England revolves around the batting - bowlers are very settled with TRJ (who was very impressive this summer) probably battling it out with Woakes for the last spot. Unless they play both but that's unlikely.

Stoneman even
Yeah like I said I know his form has been poor in County but he is the one out of the ones England have tried most likely to make it for me.

I don't get the crane thing. Go with the lions squad play some cricket. Patel would be my back up spinner as you want a like for like replacement for Ali if he is injured. Someone who can bat.
Patel will get butchered. Aussies are a predominately left handed batting team. England should really be looking at another off spinner.

Reckon Parkinson at lancs will quickly overtake crane who's not got a good average.
Ashes? If England lose, will they keep their captain? Even a funeral director doesn't keep losing the ashes.
Stoneman usually scores at a decent SR and I think we'll see that in Australia. He deals in a lot of boundaries so will need to find areas where he can comfortably rotate the strike whether that be a Trescothick style dead bat into the offside or a Cook trademark nudge off the hip to fine leg.
It's a shame we can't get that other Surrey lad in the side at 3 as he's selfishly retiring at the end of the season. Some 1149 runs from 12 innings at an average of 114.9 and able to add to that today as he starts on 85 not out.
Essex have lost an early wicket and Lancashire have just taken the last Somerset wicket which now means Westley and Hameed are up. Regardless of whether these matches will be enough for the selectors to consider using them as a process for selection remains to be seen. However after Stoneman's century yesterday, they'll feel added pressure on them today.
Westley's gone for 28 but Woakes was the one who got him so a positive/negative outlook on that. Hameed is currently at his absolute best, 4 from 49 balls, strike rate of 8.
Thanks. I hope Hameed can stay there...
Not too good for Westley but he'll have other chances.
Well he got out shortly after, mistiming a hook off a medium pacer which isn't a pretty dismissal against someone about 15 mph slower than the sort of pace he'd face against the Aussies if selected.

imo we should give him a year or two. He could be the answer at 3 for England. He can come in and play to not get out. Reassuring presence at 3 like Trott once was, also a slow scorer.
Well Lancashire got bowled out pretty quickly so Gamers gets a second dig today. Looks like the title is all but done with Essex over 150 ahead of Warks and Lancashire some 200 behind Somerset.
