Nothing Kills Optimism Quite Like LFC

OP take you're negativity elsewhere.

It doesn't matter that you happen to be spot on, you have to spin everything and pretend everything's Rosie.

Henderson is extremely average - his commitment and work rate make him average otherwise he would be classed as atrocious based on his ability with the ball.

Lovren has consistently been shocking and he must have something on Klopp to keep getting played.

TAA----Matip----Klavan-----Moreno

So if you knew that, at the end of last season, that the above would be our defence going into the City game (substitute Lovren for Klavan where appropriate) and for the season:

1. Would you be happy with it?
2. Would you be confident of making top 4 with it?
3. Would you have accused Klopp of being incompetent/negligent for not addressing our defensive frailties.

I think this defence will cost us silverware, top 4 and could could cost Klopp his job come the end of the season.

Couldn't agree more

I think it's extra frustrating because our attacking options look capable of winning the league, champs league etc whilst the rear guard could easy play lower league football

There's no doubt that we are a class outfit when attacking; but we knew that last season. We also knew that our defence and GK were not of the standard to challenge for the league and other silverware.

Mourinho and Conte have proven that they are able to of killing a game after taking a one nil lead.

Poch, like Klopp, likes to play attacking football so has assembled a top quality defence because I don't think he's as defensively astute as Mourinho and Conte.

Again, Peps similar to Klopp in that he wants to outscore the opponent rather than concentrate on his defence; however City's defence is better than ours and there attack is more clinical than ours.

In relation to the teams I have just mentioned, I feel we are weaker than last season and I just don't see how we can make top 4.

That's not pessimism, that's my judgement based on my observations from last season and this season.

The best indicator for future behaviour is past behaviour and our defence did, and continues to give the opposition 1-2 clear cut opportunities to score every game.

You'll outscore opponents in this group. But can't play that way v Bayern real etc in knock outs.

If you had drawn a strong group like athletico and Roma, you would really struggle. Your squad is poor

We did far better last season against the better sides in the league. It was our results against teams in the lower half which proved costly. Perhaps our squad isn't that bad?

Indicative of the era of Sly hype and tellyclapper.

From we can win the league, our defence is sorted, what a great transfer window to everything is rubbish in the space of 180 mins

Exactly.

When you read through threads like these you begin to wonder just how many sockpuppets there are on this site......

1. TAA has looked alright and the injury to Clyne couldn't have been foreseen. We weren't in the market for a RB. Yes Klavan/Lovren aren't ideal. And the renewed faith in Moreno frustrates me a little bit.

2. I think we'll make top 4 personally.

3. It's not as if we weren't looking for a CB. We bought a LB. The keeper situation is still cause for concern. But I wouldn't say Klopp finished last season happy with the defensive situation, and thinking that part of the first 11 doesn't need improving. The VDV saga says otherwise. I think it's harsh to call him incompetent/negligent.

Yeah we shouldn't have been so blinkered and moved on to other possible targets after the VDV saga. However it's not unreasonable to say VDV and Keita in MF would've improved us defensively.

The coutinho saga held you back massively

It was a disappointing result in truth. Liverpool played against a half decent football team, but they didn't look anything special and could easily be beaten away. Decent in possession and pressing, but didn't create many chances. Individual errors that cost Liverpool 3 points. Woeful defending from Lovren, Can failed to get stuck in initially and pulled out and Henderson was too slow to react and didn't get stuck in for their 2nd goal as well as Moreno caught out of position.

Going forward, Liverpool missed 3 key, guilt-edge chances. Can should have scored when he dragged his effort wide, Moreno had a chance but blasted it in the only area the keeper could have saved it and obviously the penalty miss from Firmino.

Liverpool clearly need a better CB alongside Matip, which should have been addressed a long, long time ago now. But if they can cut out the individual errors, they won't leak so many goals.

I do wonder whether you actually believe what you write. It held us "back" "massively" did it.

How far back is massive just out of interest?

How did you, personally, measure this?

Where's Diego, right now? Is he still on the run as a bandido in south America?
Are there 'Wanted' posters on the walls of all the jails?

Is he still complaining that Chelsea are treating him like a prisoner? #FreeDiego

I'd say the Diego Costa saga has held Chelsea back.
