Was reading the policing bill earlier and some of the protest/demonstration proposals are a bit concerning tbh.
See part 60 which will mean the likes of Steve Bray (stop brexit dude) would be breaking the law by protesting outside parliament.
https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill/58-01/0268/200268.pdf
Mentioned on another thread that instead of tougher sentencing, gov needs to properly fund the judicial system which is currently in a really poor state.

Really hard to believe that a full democratic country could pass such a bill.
If it goes through, where will they stop?

Assange isn't a good guy, shades of grey, some of his revelations make the world change for the good and some for the bad. Same goes for Snowden. I do think though that when you sign the official secrets act, you do so knowingly and shouldn't sign it unless you are willing to honour it. If it becomes or is reduced to discretionary then technology and information could be our undoing once it is in the wrong hands.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This assumes that this info is in the right hands before it's been leaked? Maybe we are already undone as it is. This is Assanges reasoning perhaps. What are these entities doing with the information? How sure are you that these capitalistic all for profit entities are using it in your best interests? If he felt that this info was in dangerous hands or being misused without the knowledge and approval of the masses, taking advantage of people, then he had a right to expose that, as a person and as a journalist.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Whilst (personally) he may have felt a moral obligation to publish classified information, the reasons why secret military and diplomatic documents are give top secret classification were known to Assange before he chose to release them into the public domain.
I don't think anyone considering his actions impartially would conclude the USGov (given the diplomatic embarrassment he caused) would not seek to indict him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course he knew it's an offence and whistleblowing relies on the release of info that the owner does not want released, but if for instance some entity is spying on you, selling your info to third parties etc then that's also really scary.
Even the US constitution carries a call to arms for every citizen to fight a rogue government. No entity is infallible or impenetrable.
