Thing is the entire reason we know about all this donation stuff from Starmer is because he's actually declared it as you're supposed to do.
The rules are stupid that it's allowed for politicians in the first place, and I hope they change it to stop it, but I also find it odd he's being pilloried for being transparent and following the correct process.
Literally just this week for example it's emerged Badenoch is using a donors flat for her campaign, but she hasn't actually declared it yet, so surely the bigger story should be going after those who don't declare these gifts.

That would require the right wing press to actually care that this is an issue. It’s only an issue when it’s someone that they want to smear.

Despite the Party’s current soft centrism, the ownership of the ‘British’ press (very little of which is actually British now, of course) is going to be very concerned about the possibility of a relatively unrestrained Labour running the country for two terms.
I don’t expect that things will get any easier for them in terms of the editorials between now and 2029.

Hes not taking 300 off pensioners is he. Hes just not giving it those who can do without it. And also the average household price rise will be 150.
The media have done a proper job on the more challenged of us. I keep seeing people repeatedly write that they’ve stopped the winter fuel payments and that 11 million pensioners are going to be worse off.
It’s just not true.

When I've seen him asked about the fact that he took two and a half times more than the next highest mp (mostly in opposition) he gets narky and just doesn't appear to get how it looks.
--------
He's taken that much in comparison to others because all those who claimed more than him lost their job in the election. From memory Johnson had accepted gifts upwards of £1m.
Which kind of proves the point about the media, that they didn't raise this as an issue until Labour and Starmer got in.
I'll add in the interest of balance however that I do think Starmer was a fool to not see this coming.
The UK has announced it is giving up sovereignty of a remote but strategically important cluster of islands in the Indian Ocean after more than half a century.
The deal – reached after years of negotiations - will see the UK hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius in a historic move.
WOW! This should have the Reform lot frothing
The proposed WFA threshold is too low but I am glad it's being mean tested now. There's absolutely no reason a household who's paid their mortgage off and is bringing in £2k+ a month should get £300 to cover fuel costs just because they're over 65.
There's plenty of working age people who need it more.

Yes, but it’s not 11 million people is it, that’s just a lie lapped up by mugs. They’re also increasing pensions and also proactively trying to engage people not accessing the right benefits.

Fuel payments are not part of the state pension. This is an extraordinary payment on top of the pension due to Ukraine war. Apparently. What you are talking about is that the pension is clearly not enough inline with the cost of living. Which is a different discussion. Nobody in their right mind disagrees with that. Except Bademoch probably.

Facking hell, that’s amazing news!
‘The treaty will also "address wrongs of the past and demonstrate the commitment of both parties [UK and Mauritius] to support the welfare of Chagossians", the statement read.’
Let’s see what that actually looks like in terms of details (serious facking reparations are due if we’re being honest), but this is absolutely the right thing to do.

The threshold is too low and the system for testing is daft; the issues are in the details, not the concept.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
We don’t (and maybe never will) know the true number although I think it’s fair to say that up to 11 million are pulled into this policy. Whether they end up being directly affected depends on many factors.
It’s more than an optic in my view. It’s just something I never saw a Labour government doing and certainly not as one of their first actions in government.
The savings were estimated at £1.5bn but there is now additional resource required to get round all these pensioners and try and help them with applications and the like and that’s before the administrative costs.
I just simply don’t get it. It doesn’t even make financial sense when considering the backlash and surely far easier and more recognisable Labour “targets”.
Doubling down on it is even worse. What a great way to be seen to having a rethink on a very unpopular policy having “listened” to those they wish to govern.
A spectacular own goal, and may even have deflected from the other pressures they currently face.
Stopped reading at ‘it’s more the optic’ tbh.
Crying about how things look, instead of how they actually are, is how the RW media mugs of disadvantaged/challenged people.
He said it’s more than the optics, to be fair.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Haha, the same right wing press that gave him a free ride into number 10 and are now discoverering what a dodgy boiler he is?
I had the bloke weighed up from the moment he conned his way into the Labour leadership. Maybe I should be a journalist.

The media have done a proper job on the more challenged of us. I keep seeing people repeatedly write that they’ve stopped the winter fuel payments and that 11 million pensioners are going to be worse off.
It’s just not true.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What?
If you remove any allowance then they are quite simply worse off. It is very true for goodness sake.
Why can’t any civil person still not grasp the fact that this move is easily seen by even Labour’s own members and their supporters and unions as being just plain wrong and ill thought through?
And to save how much exactly?
They are under fire from all sides.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, but it’s not 11 million people is it, that’s just a lie lapped up by mugs. They’re also increasing pensions and also proactively trying to engage people not accessing the right benefits.
The optics are bad, but the reality is it’s been blown out of proportion and the more challenged among us have lapped it up.
That’s entirely true.

Hes not taking 300 off pensioners is he. Hes just not giving it those who can do without it.
--------------------------------------------------
That is incorrect, the criteria used is way off the mark as it affects a huge amount of people who jsut rely on State Pension not just the better off ones.
It was a real eye opener to me when my Mother hit 65 as to what she was going to still have to pay for. Things like dental care, opticians visits, even Council Tax remained the same as if she was still a person of working age.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fuel payments are not part of the state pension. This is an extraordinary payment on top of the pension due to Ukraine war. Apparently. What you are talking about is that the pension is clearly not enough inline with the cost of living. Which is a different discussion. Nobody in their right mind disagrees with that. Except Bademoch probably.

All if this.
We have a terrible pension. If only we’d had people in power for 14 years that profess to care about pensioners.

This
The threshold is too low and the system for testing is daft; the issues are in the details, not the concept.
