I play tennis at a decent club level, the penalty system is based on the tennis tie break system. The key point is that it creates more pressure points earlier in the system.
This is what created a situation where Coady was under pressure at the third penalty. Where as in alternative penalties system the pressure would have been on the city player “to consolidate the break’
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But don't tie breaks often just fizzle out as well?
Thought it was pretty terrible to watch
First time I've seen that penalty format, and it's shat....period !
I get what you're saying tartan, but there's pressure on every player who takes a penalty. Personally, I don't like to see defenders taking them. I much prefer forwards or attacking midfield players taking them first, as they are more used to scoring from open play.
In tennis it was designed to balance which side of the court you served from, but the unintentional aspect was that it created psychological pressure. The basic is that you cannot lose two serves in a row or in football miss two penalties in a row.
The flaw in football is that in tennis points are awarded on all attempts, therefore you could be 0-3 down by losing one service point but recover by breaking your opponents service once. They have tried to copy something that does not work because the scoring systems are different.
Yeah fair point tartan, also only five pens as opposed to seven points needed for tennis, it just doesn't have time to pick up momentum in footy.
Wouldn't be so bad if all eleven took a pen ?
Think that might work with that format

That's actually a good idea.
That is true, the number of attempts and the fact that in tennis you need to win by two points.
As much as I highlight the psychological aspects, the basics are that if I served better then I would not need to give a rats ass about psychology, equally if we took better penalties.

Well played Wolves, some solid defending there.
Take some consolation in the fact that Liverpool and Napoli couldn't keep a clean sheet at our place this season.
We'll bring the first team next year
You'll be facing our first team next time.
Should be another good game then
Ttttttttt
Jota, Neves, a fit Costa - we'd have won that by five clear goals.
Save it for next season Herbie.

Quiet here on the former mobile sauna, it's now like a fooking fridge. What a night you be a wolves fan. So much pride, so much frustration.
Although we played wonderfully as a team, individually we made too many mistakes and is a miracle City didn't take advantage. We conceded possession far too easily at times, and the defence and the brilliant Norris got us out of jail on numerous occasions.
We carved out some great openings on the break, Bright and Costa ran them ragged, if only they could finish. I'd be home in bed now instead of listening to people snoring on a freezing cold bus on the m6 somewhere near Crewe.
Will Norris wolves career.

Agree with most of that, Oldgoldilox. We played magnificently, but it's a case of what might have been. When (not so) Bright ran clear at 90 mins, we all knew he wouldn't score, because that's what he does. If only we had signed one or more additional strikers in the summer, we'd be in the quarters now.
A great defensive performance by Wolves for 120 mins and City, for all of their dominance, never really looked like scoring.
And our fans.

He doesn't even say what was wrong with the ball. Its just because the brand was Mitre and not Nike or Adidas. Don't think he realises that Mitre sponsored the Premier League for years.
Says it would have been impossible for Aguero to break the record with that ball. That must be also be why Wolves missed 4 good chances too.
Excellent performance by this Wolves team who fought for 120 minutes to earn the draw and created three really good chances to win it. Norris and the defenders did a sterling job getting bodies in the way. The pressure from City did of course result in some errors but they couldn’t finish us off and we stopped them getting a record number of successive wins and stopped Aguerro getting his record.
I won’t join in the criticism of Enobakhare. Not just about him missing chances also about him carrying the ball 60 yards to get those chances and a new signing in the summer may well not have got into those positions, and Costa also missed a gilt edged chance.
Good that we rested many of our key players because those that did play last night would doubtless be nackered for the weekend. N’Diaye in particular covered miles and looked dead on his feet in extra time.
4 games in this competition without conceding a goal including two away games against Premier League teams shows we have the squad to keep things going through the season
