I've noticed and been part of an odd pattern.

It seems often, those who work their asses off, touch of brown nosing, staying back extra, working extra don't seem to do as well as the p1sstakers who swan in late, leave early, take liberties, but can deliver banter. These tend to be more creative types who can come up with ways around things, and may cut corners when given the chance ain't done me any harm

It depends if you are mates with the boss, it has been the same at every company I have worked for. I now work for one of the big energy companies and it is the same.

Work your balls off, do an excellent job, take no time off sick etc and you get over looked for promotion in favour of the bosses mates, who invariably are pishh takers, slackers, take lots of time off sick, are less qualified etc.

There have even been instances of bosses telling their mates the answers to aptitude tests so they can promote them over other, better suited candidates, even though they are hopelessly out of their depth.

That old saying, "It`s not what you know, but who you know".
