Greek Fixing Charges

"The long running judicial investigation into Greek football has partially been resolved with the Judicial Council of dropping four criminal charges against Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The charges of match-fixing against 28 individuals will however go ahead. Marinakis is still included in this list though the chairman of the Judicial Council of Athens said he was not of the opinon that Marinakis should be charged in this case."

The sooner this goes to trial the better.

We all know there is corruption of one sort or another in most top level sport.

We don't want this hanging over us for any longer. We all hope that Mr Marinakis is found innocent of course; but it sounds as though if it goes against him plans have been put in place for it to have a minimum effect on the club.

Indeed Red, our chairman suggested as much in his letter post takeover

As the guy doesn't live in Greece he runs his business from London, can't see there being anything in it. Are club officials in the dock too? He runs his clubs at arms length.

Based on the failure of any of the other allegations to bear fruit, don’t really see thins going anywhere. Seems to me Marinakis has upset the established order in Greek football and they are throwing whatever they can at him.

If I am wrong it would appear the club is set up in a way that any suspension from footballing activities wouldn’t have an adverse effect on Forest as there is a structure in place to allow things to carry on regardless.

That's what I think too Will, I'm sure the club will make a statement at some point and not one of the Fawaz level ones either. To be honest everyone knew there was potential charges hanging over him but the story is that one is being pursued (although the Judicial Council don't think he should be) and the other four have been dropped.

I don't think at this stage there is anything to get too worked up about

"Mr Marinakis has made sure that the structures are in place to protect the Club regardless of his indiviual misfortunes"
-Part of Randells open letter when the greeks first came in.

You'd suspect if he was guilty forest would be alright. From what little I've seen, possible sanctions only include those on greek football unless there's others.

Didnt something similar happen when Marinakis first tried to buy the club? Allegations against 20+ people including Marinakis, many dropped at the first hurdle. The rest dropped after.

He might be a criminal and about to get clouted for it, or more likely this is of part of the mud slinging politics of greek football and we'll probably see more of it. Guess we'll see.

Well...
The guardian:
Evangelos Marinakis, has been charged with criminal match-fixing offences in Greece and ordered by a panel of judges to stand down as chairman of the Athens club Olympiakos.

From a Greek on another Forest forum...

"Marinakis has been indicted by the Judicial Council (on a vote of 2-1, and with the president of the Board voting against the indictment) for the second round of match-fixing accusations, although for much less than what the prosecutor had proposed. The indictment itself is subject to appeal and I am not quite certain what the legal ramifications are before this incredible case goes to trial. It's a bit too legalese for me. What is certain is that he will have to resign from being president of Olympiacos pending trial (or its cancellation). There is talk of an obligation to hand over his shares too, but this is unclear for the time being.

This second round of accusations was even more ludicrous than the first (for which he was exonerated). The prosecutor's proposal (illegally leaked to the press) was a monument of legal and football absurdity. "In game X, the referee did not call a penalty against the opponent of Olympiacos, and this is an indication of foul play". That sort of thing. No evidence, no money changing hands, no phone calls (Marinakis' phones were tapped for many years), just the testimony of some shady characters that two games were fixed, the allegations for one of which have been cleared by the sports judge. In all likelihood when this thing goes to trial he will be acquitted. But the damage may have been already done by then, both for Marinakis and for Olympiacos.

Despite the absurdity, I am not surprised he was indicted. Unfortunately, the case has become very heavily politicized, in the Greek sense of politics, which means important businessmen (and football and business rivals of Marinakis) colluding with specific politicians. I could explain the details but it would take too long and I have a very heavy workload these days.

Of course, I cannot vouch for anyone I don't know personally, and Marinakis could very well be the devil incarnate. But I would like to see some evidence first."

Talking of dodgy refereeing decisions, take a look at the penalty awarded against N.Ireland this evening. Plus a yellow that should have been a red card for a two footed tackle.

Spart, I'm not obsessed with Derby, I don't comment on your board. He has been cleared of that charge along with 3 others. Push off

Funny Ray, but I am certain you do and I did think it a reasonable point about what you would be saying were he the owner of Derby. I suspect your take on these reports would be different. I remember a similar reaction when we mentioned on your boards about our doubts about Fawaz. You can keep censoring if you wish but one day you may recognise the truth in what I am saying. It is also a public forum and I don't need to take any notice of what you say.

It would appear from what many observers are saying over in Greece that most of is hot air. We will eventually see the truth of it but it appears it is going to take a heck of a long time. Can’t fault any of his, and Kominakis’s, ownership so far really. We are all hoping it won’t detract from what they have achieved so far at the CG so will have to be a waiting game.

Spart, you start off with the usual childishly worded comment intended on starting off a slanging match. I guess that's what you desire hence you coming back.

I would have posted on articles that were on both boards, but not for a long long time on Derby ones that aren't. If you are convinced otherwise, find it then

As for this.....

"You can keep censoring if you wish but one day you may recognise the truth in what I am saying."

Firstly I'm not stopping you coming out with the rubbish you do, I'm just ensuring it's not in threads I've created where we're attempting to have sensible discussion without obsessed morons like yourself chirping up. Censorship FFS

As for the "truth" in what you are saying. I don't believe I have said on here I'm convinced they are innocent. Just there is a lot of doubt about the charges as 4 have easily gone away and 1 remaining where the chair of the committee didn't think that should have proceeded. We also discussed the fact that we're actually owned by a consortium, and it has been inferred previously that contingencies have been put in place.

So your tact of him being found guilty and us going under, is neither fact or constructive, or leads me to have desire to include you even if you try a bit to be slightly less of moron.

If he stopped being a moron Ray, that would destroy his life's work!
