just imagine if we did it.....
Shame Malan went at the end as he looked to be a good anchor.
As much will depend on Woakes tomorrow morning as well as Root. He'll need to help see off the first few overs, as we can't afford for Bairstow and Alli to come in too early. I also think Bairstow should move above Alli in the line up - you want England to be as close as possible before Alli comes in.
I reckon England have that in mind. With Woakes' promotion up to 6 as a sort of night watchman but they must have thought he'd be better at sticking around tomorrow, Bairstow would be coming in at 8 if we stick with the current line up so it'll be more like what we had in the summer with Woakes in for Stokes.
RE: Root, very good under immense pressure. Offered up chances but it was so tough out there and the main thing was that he survived.

Just imagine if we don`t get there.
My money is on a first session collapse tomorrow, seen it all before, I hope I am wrong
U won’t be wrong Billy Willy! U will witness englund crumbling like pack of cards pal!
50 and out got to love his consistency.
I’m always rightttttttttttttt!
To be fair Kashy that title belongs to Pak this year cos they lost to such a weak Lankan team.... englund not much far behind though!
England always bottle run chases. Should have had the same attitude as the west indies. Dare to win. Not got anyone as good as Shai hope. Root is overrated. Doesn't produce with the pressure on. Typical flat track bully.
Can't consider Root a top top player until he makes match winning contributions. He's always been the man for the pretty 50s but they don't win you tests. Did well to stick it out yesterday but that's not good enough.
Others also need to contribute but this was the opportunity for Root to make his name.

Below the belt - sorry.
tbh it's embarrasing watching players with masks on and a game being stopped because the air is so polluted. Absolutly ridiculous and with the money involved they should be doing better
Whilst I agree that Root needs to do better and have a better conversion rate, some of the stuff written here is ridiculous.
Some of the greatest batsmen ever such as Sachin, Lara, Inzimam, Ponting, Kallis have buckled under the pressure of a 4th innings chase many times. People really have selected memory when remembering these greats. Not saying Root is on their level yet, but you can pick holes in anyone's career if you really want.
As captain and best batsman he should bat 3. Instead we have Vince who is not good enough to bat 3 as sacrificial lamb in that position
Weakness all through the team, Alli against the spin and he's gone 4 times to Nathan Lyon
Vince looks mentally exhausted, I like Stoneman but him and Cook just aren't a good partnership
Would like to see Foakes take the gloves, move Bairstow up to 2 or 3, get Mark Wood in and let's go after Australia in Perth
No pace and no one making big runs. Some look good like Stoneman and Malan and get out for 30 odd. May be they get worn down by the quality bowling.
Stoneman will be disappointed with his dismissal, it wasn't awful but he could have done better. I think we need a century at the top of the order (although one from anyone will do) in Perth; Cook looks out of sorts and Vince, well, despite his 83 he shouldn't be in the side. Stoneman has looked the most solid of the top 3 so it'll have to come down to him.
I've liked what I've seen from Malan, he's surprised me with his character and fortitude as I thought he was just a limited overs specialist. He's worth sticking with in my view even though the big scores aren't there yet.
A lot of talk saying that Cook has to go but for goodness sake, we've spent the last 5 and a half and counting years trying to replace Strauss.
Stoneman reminds me of Ramprakash, not in style, but in the way they both look like they can play at Test level, but don't quite make the volume of runs. Carberry was the same on the last tour.
Carberry was England 2nd top scorer after KP, he must.be thinking why wasn't I given this many chances.
Is was a disgrace dropping Carberry after the last ashes tour. He probably was our best batsman and looked accomplished against possibly the best pace bowling he'd ever have faced at test level.
England missed a trick not giving him a run in the side. He could have been our Warner at the top of the order.
Hasn't Carberry been fighting a much severe battle with cancer?
