I'll be back tomorrow with my "prediction", but is sad about Blair who seemed to be back to his best - like an "old fashioned" winger. What was the guy in the 50s - Johnny Money?

posted on 8/12/17

Yes it was Johnny Mooney. He was a Scot I think and fast and skilful. The first player who really impressed me when I was about 6 or 7 was a right winger too called Alf Calverley. When you were small you were watching at ground level and it was very exciting to see the right winger charging up the side of the pitch and beating the full-back before centering the ball. It would be right in front of where I used to stand just to the right of the goal at the Rossington end.

2-2, Rowe again and 5926 there

Donaldo,
The gang from my school were not too far away from you - we stood at the Rossie end, to the right of the goal, but more in the corner near the top (not to far from the "Bovril Hut" on cold days!) .
I was going to say 2-2 but decoded to be braver to go for another win 2-1 to the Rovers, Marquis to really get back on the goal trail before a crowd of 6820.

I've just seen the weather forecast in the mother country and so reduce my attendance guess to 6320.

Tough match but am going for a 2-1 win. Rowe. Crowd of 7125.

Long drive home

Another last minute goal conceded costing us more points. As well as Lawlor did with the pen and a couple of shots he's been beat by arguably the worst effort full on 35 yard daisy cutter. Rowe could have put us in front but hit the post and I thought that even though Toffolo was down injured there was no way an extra 2-3 mins of time could have been added on top of the 3 stated.

Disappointing but I feel it will be our home form to pull us out of it and with 6 pointers coming up against Oldham Northampton and Rochdale id say we need at least a return of 7 if not 9!

Think i have calmed down now
Lawlor had a really good game but could and should have done better with the goal but there are 10 in front of him.lawlor 7/8
Mason 6/7 wight7 butler 8 toff 6/
wildman 6 Houghton 6/7 26
beestin 6..marquis 8/9

First half we were second best mainly due to generally our first touch was poor and we continually gave the ball away.
Second half we were CLEARLY the better side creating good chances.
26 pullec out of a 1 on 1 with keeper when it was 65=35 on his favour (dont get upset H).
Prob best performance i have seen from marquis in a long time.

The ref was consistently poor both ways.
Never a pen for me.
The added time ok.
They had a goal kick on 94 mins.
In view of our past problems in 90+ mins did DF not consider bringing on Baudry and telling him to go on and galvanize and focus the defence for the last minute.Great support by the way

DF's main complaint was about the time keeping and the ref may well have allowed as many as 2 minutes beyond the advertised addition. However the game is as long as the ref decides and the fact is that we allowed the opposition to score a crucial goal in the closing minutes yet again.

Both sides get the same number of minutes to play and change the score. The problem with Rovers is that they regularly exhibit this fatal weakness in the closing minutes.

In any job you are expected to put in a full day's effort and those who underperform when the working day is near its end are not as valuable as those who keep on till the bitter end.

When it's a competitive sport it's the player or the team that holds its nerve. When I'm playing golf and I've got a good score after 16 holes I suddenly become aware of the possibility of winning and more often than not, particularly as I've got older, I'll mess up the last 2 holes.

Sadly Rovers do the same. The nearer the end it gets and there is just a goal in it the more nervous they become.

So in my view, sadly, they failed.

The results of the DPL show that they let us all down.

Watching on iFollow it was another frustrating game. The first half was relatively even, but in the second we dominated. I was a not worried about losing and thought we would get at least one and win. Several players missed "open headers", but then I thought Rowe was very unlucky with the shot that hit the post and almost ran along the goal line - for many people the ball would have spun in, not out. Some may think he should have scored, but it was a well-placed shot about an inch out. His pile driver was a very good hit and a good save, but a little lower and it would have gone in - or deflected wide off someone on the way! He was a very unlucky guy!
As far as the penalty was concerned Fergie appeared to say the lineswoman thought it was outside the area and was over-ruled. I've played the video in slow motion and it seems initial contact was just, and I mean just, outside - let's face it, the Oxford player never got into the area. Thank goodness Lawlor saved the kick.
As far as their goal, I agree with Donaldo you play until the the ref calls the end. However, the added time seemed "generous". Although Mason could have done more, and Hound will hate me for saying it, I think Lawlor should have saved it. The shot was well placed, but did not have much pace, and Lawlor should have had a good sight when you look at the position of all the players.

"Perhaps Lawlor should have saved it as it was hit from way out, but it was struck well with head down. So much harder to keep out when kept low than at a nice height for a keeper."

Not my words, but those of an Oxford blogger - and really it is difficult to excuse the keeper when the shot was struck from so far outside the box. I've said this before, but the facts show that Lawlor fails to save a lot of long range shots which is a weakness.

His "reaction saves" when he has no time to think are good, but he lets in far too many longer range shots. Perhaps this and a feeling that it's-not-fair-that-the-ref-has-added-on-all-this-extra-time affects him more than most.

A solution might be to get the forwards to defend in the final minutes of games and put someone else in goal!

A good percentage of fans on my bus home voted lawlor mom behind the much lambasted marquis who was excellent.
Lawlor was very good apart from the goal.
It we had been 2 down at half time you could not have blamed him.
If you look at the goal on tv we were all over the shop which in view of our late goal history is inexcusable in my eyes.
