Is possession a factor, beat Southampton with 47%, lose to Palace with 56%?
---
In games where opponents are more likely to defend a lead than look to extend it, then it's not at all surprising for the losing side to wind up with more possession.
Your oppo gives you more of the ball and hopes to catch you on the break.
So, looked at in isolation it's just as likely to be the consequence as it is to be the cause.
Totally agree but we need to show higher possession to play better football don’t we?
Real Football like the ‘big’ teams do with lots of possession and ticky tacky passing rather than the short termism style that won us the League?
I know what you're getting at TB, but the naked possession stats don't prove the point you seem to want to make - even less so when the lower possession is also pretty consistent with a side playing away from home.
Yes, you won the league with that short termism style - and the myriad other stuff that fell into place that magical season.
How many times haven't you won anything with it? Has it ever got you relegated?
Is it plausible that it might get you relegated in future?
That league title is something no one will ever be able to take off you, but for all you know, you might try to do everything exactly the same over and over and it might not work again in a thousand years.
TB your as predicable as a Shakey starting eleven and just as easy to beat. But thank you,you have put a smile on my face after yesterday.
Good luck with going back to the huff ball over the top vardy you might be surprised that we have move on and getting more out players who want to play football and a comfortable with rather than is a hot potato.
Yesterday was a reality check that we are a work in progress but that's revolutions for you.
It must really hurt that we made more passes against Newcastle than any city side since 2005 and had more possession and put more past them than Arsenal did?

Naked possession stats don't prove anything, that's my point yet fans like Nev think it means we're playing better Football just because of the stat and regularly bring it up.
To me it's about the tempo, when we're on fire it's all about the quality and speed of passes going forwards to destroy the opposition defense rather than we had great possession stats.
Ironic for fans like Nev who want to forget about the way we won the Title that it's had a bigger impact in the Premier League than anyone admits, Man Utd tried exactly the same tactic against City as City did themselves earlier in the Season, so the pressure up, let the opposition have all the possession then break at speed.
It's very sad that Nev sees the way we won the League as hoof ball over the top to Vardy when we out played every other team in the League to win the Title.

Agree it's about the tempo, but you also need to learn to play a more patient game at times.
Like it or not, winning the PL has changed you.
You're no longer a club that can visit every PL ground and expect everyone to feel the obligation of coming at you.
You have to expect that clubs you once considered in 'your own league' will now hand the ball over to see what you can do with it.
The mistake is to think possession football is only pass-pass-pass at 2mph.
Problem is doing it fast takes learning, and not every player is good enough for it. Conversely, you don't have to have Man City-level funds to find the adequate players.
Completely agree but then as you've said we need the players to do that, we sold our midfield playmaker in the Summer to Chelsea and failed by 14 seconds to get his replacement when in fact we should have been having both at the Club.
I'm not advocating staying the same, I just find it sad some fans write off the way we played as if it was some kind of inferior Football, a bit like a lot of pundits and Oppo Fans did while we were winning it.
Being a smaller Club we have to play to the squad strengths and we've done that brilliantly, breaking down a team that gives us the ball and keeps 11 players behind it has been an issues for us for years, we just look clueless.
The top teams have playmakers who can thread the pass's through and players who are constantly on the move making the space, we have nothing at the moment.
When Silva arrives we all hope this will be a piece of the puzzle that does allow us to move forward and play 'real football'

I would not for one single second knock Leicester's achievement. It's one of the greatest in the history of the game, imo.
But your status in football changed the day you lifted the PL trophy, and will stay that way for years to come.
Btw, doesn't Mahrez have good playmaking skills, or is he all dribble?
Which Silva's that, Hugo?
One things for sure, if you have the ball the other team can't score, until you give it away cheaply like Mahrez does far to often to be a real top player.
It's what you do when you haven't got the ball...
True but equally true what you do with it while you've got it and where you've got it.
Adrien Silva BTW.
We were really flat yesterday in the first half. Lack of movement coupled with poor passing put us under pressure. There may have been an element of tiredness as there was one less recovery day since Wednesday. Iborra didn't have a great game either which didn't help.
It was marginally better in the second half until Ndidi had his brainfart. He's young though and will hopefully have learned he gets 0 points for artistic impression.
Trying to play a possession based game potentially exposes our defence more and as we've seen, it isn't the best when not getting the protection it has been used to . Would playing Okazaki and Fuchs from the start have made a difference? Probably yes, it might have ended up 0-0 instead which would have been an improvement on what happened. We'll see what Claude makes of it.

I think he’s still knackered from playing and scoring midweek!
Can't anyone see that we could played 442 and sat back the result would of been the same CP had a game plan and as the home team its our job to take the game to them but it was the other way round.
Nothing wrong with our PL winning team mangaged and inspired by the best manager we have ever had who was sacked by the players for trying to get them to evolve into the revolution that Puel is making now.
Who said anything about playing 442 or even playing a different way?

I disagree, if we'd played more to our strengths we could have got something. We were not good enough at playing the sort of possession game we tried yesterday and got punished for it.
Start without two lightweights up front and a lad learning his trade at left back and we would have been much tighter and more difficult to break down. Boring maybe but we could have got a draw at least.
It's not a shock that we don't have the best defenders, that's always been the case but they've had much better protection so not as evident.
We're going to get occasional bad days as we try and evolve but it's no good pretending that it's nothing to do with team selection and tactics.
Well the team selection and tactics have won us four on the spin and with all the players you mentioned so its must be working just not yesterday
