I’ve always been curious as to what would have happened if both loads of men just turned around and said fack this I’m going home?

The First World War from what I’ve read was was proper horrible, trench foot , men dying from wounds that were infected, sleeping in mud.

IMO it will only be a matter of time until WW3. Why can’t these so called leaders of the world sort there facking problems out like men, rather than trying to be Barry big bollix with each other ? , and causing throughout history millions to have died?

Lets hope it never gets this bad again

Can't ever envisage a scenario where it would, not with the advances in technology that we've seen

I'll quantify that by saying that those advances wouldn't make any war "good" that would be absurd, just won't see the sheer numbers of personnel involved in frontline battle like that again

well lets hope our little sheltered lives never have to endure the sort of hell those kids fighting for god and country had to in 1914

god bless them all on both sides

Didn’t some high ranking officials from our side after the war deny the truce ever happened?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i'm not sure however i heard that the powers that would be made sure that the truce didn't happen again as they were worried about espionage ect.

Although something similar happened in 1915 by all accounts however on a smaller scale

I think after the Germans sank the Lusitania in 1915 a lot of Allied soldiers were in no mood for festivities in Xmas eve, hence the lack of a truce in 1915. In addition the British commanders regularly moved men along stretches of the front so there was no fraternising with the Germans.

Casualties would be greater in number because of advanced weapons though.

More casualties in days rather than years.

Espionage
Facking ell, just a bunch of soldiers having a smoke and a kick around. Hardly gonna talk about the next day’s advance.

yeah i know, but just think about the paranoia on both sides

This 1914 incident was made into a movie....
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424205/
It is worth watching!
And there's some terrific singing across the trenches by Natalie Dessay and Rolando Villazón.

The Scots/French football team lost 6-1 to the Germans, who had a team containing 8 players that "all played for a club in Munich called Bayern".!

This is also the last appearance of one of Britian's per-eminent actors, Sir Ian Richardson.

One of the biggest killers was trench foot, which accounted for over 20,000 deaths alone.

There was no real tactics in places like The Somme saw well over a million soldiers dead in 5 months, and at Passchendaele- over 550,000 Allied and German troops were killed in 3 months.

Whilst all war is futile, both this one and the 2nd World war were to halt repression and fascism.

The gallantry of all our services was incredible, and I include my late Father in that too. People like sizzle, who readily run down this country and our history, should understand the reason they can voice opinions like that is because of the sacrifice of those who died in the two World wars.

As the motto of the British Legion says Service not self!
