If Van Dijk can solidify Liverpool as a CL team then he is worth the money
Big if though.
Of course Arsenal will suffer. But no matter who comes in, they'll play crap. Look at Xhaka and Mustafi
Liverpool are being robbed blind and it's because they have Klavan, Lovren and Mignolet as their last line of defence, and other teams can see how desperate they are.
=================================
So wheres Arsenals desperation to improve their defence then ?
Another article on this transfer
This should have been the article:
"My fear is that if we do not start to rebuild soon, we will end up in the same position, and with a board who have a track record for refusing to spend that kind of money." rather than the rather mundane rant about buying Suarez and de Bruyne.
Will we end up in the same position? Well, yes if we shop in certain markets. But that is the situation regardless of the VvD.
But there are also very good players available at prices far less - the fee here is very much an abnormality.
Our board does not really have a track record of refusing to pay those sort of prices. These sort of prices do not really have a track record. We have spent big - relative to the time - on the likes of Ozil, Alexis, Mustafi, Xhaka, Lacazette. It is also true that we would have paid more for Lemar in the summer.

Why is it a big if ?
The fee won’t be an abnormality for long.
Transfer inflation isn’t going to stop.
This is a new era now.
The Neymar fee has broken a barrier and fees aren’t going back down.
Just watch in the summer.
It will remain an abnormality for a long time. You won't get defenders going for £75m very often, only a few clubs can afford that.
What’s the sell on fee for us?
15% I’m hearing.
Jolly good. Make it as high as you can 👍
You wouldn't get any of them players for that price now

Bigger fees alround means more clubs can afford bigger fees.
Nobody would have said Everton could afford what they spent last summer not long ago.
Most of the league broke their transfer record last summer, and will do so again over the next few windows before it calms down again.

Liverpool have a very good attack. If Van Dijk can solve all liverpools defensive problems they are very clearly one of the best 4 teams in the country therefore a CL team.
It is a big if because he hasn't put the shirt on yet.
I'm not a big fan of Liverpool, but this is a very ambitious move from the owners which I respect. Time will tell if it pays off
Liverpool's defensive problems ?
We have conceded 3 more than Spurs, and exactly the same as Arsenal. We also have more clean sheets than Spurs, and the best home defensive record in the premier league.
Obviously we need to improve, but no more than some others, who for whatever reason don't carry the negative narrative our defence does.

It's £80m now
Allowing for Jainflation I expect the fee to be up to £140m plus optional add ons this time tomorrow.
£80m for VVD might not be the best value for money but £97m for Sigurdsson just takes the biscuit.
"To put it in perspective, £75m would have got you Suarez 4 years ago. It would also have got you De Bruyne and left you £20m to blow on a backup player. So given the choice, would you rather have Van Dijk, or one of the other options?"
But that was 4 years ago and you wouldn't get any of those players for that money now!
This is a nonsensical comparison
Exactly.
Suarez aged 26 today would be £150m.
De Bruyne would be £90m.
Prices have basically doubled in that time, so VVD would have been £37.5m.
Not far off what the likes of Mangala, Mustafi, Luiz, Thiago Silva were going for before the transfer fee blow up.

How can you compare player values from different periods lol. Might as well say we could have got how many maradonnas for 75 mil etc.
The day united started flashing 35 nil for like Shaw, 60 odd for di maria (those went well) and the 90 for Pogba the fees in prem where already shifting.
Then the Neymar transfer happened and it got crazy. But even before the Neymar transfer u tied paid 75 mil for lukaku! We paid 37 for Salah which was seen high.
No doubt Liverpool have shown desperation and got their pants pulled down but sometimes its better to do something than nothing at all.
We will see if van Dijk can make them significantly better.I think he will struggle big time and will need this 2nd half of the season to adapt.
I have always felt that ONLY MATCH WINNERS should command big fees and it should have been that way but you cant blame Liverpool for the way things have gone. Walker, Stones etc. Ridiculous fees paid for players who realistically should not command those kind of fees or salaries.
There was a time when it was accepted that Goal keepers had a small role in the game and would command less. Now I wouldnt be surprised if Joe Hart earns as much as Harry Kane.
Game has gone to the dogs
