Hameed got injured then had a dreadful run of form (then I think he got injured again). It was sensible not to pick the young man, for his own good as much as anything else.
Since there are only two Tests in NZ my guess is there won't be too many changes to the squad and most of those who were on the tough Aussie trip will be given another little chance. But we'll see.
add dead man walking Bayliss to this list now
Chris Woakes shouldn't be in the 11.. Overton should be fit and should play..
I love the idea of bringing Clarke or Lawrence in, I've been wanting to see one of if not both brought in for some time with our continued struggles at 3 and 5. However I think England will probably leave them with the lions and their counties for a little while yet.
As Blue Heaven said, I can't see any changes being made until the summer outside of what England had available for the Ashes. The only potential would be Stokes if he's available coming in for one of the seamers and Ballance will probably come in for Vince. This isn't what I'd do but I imagine we'll line up for the opening test with;
Cook
Stoneman
Malan/Ballance
Root
Ballance/Malan
Stokes
Bairstow
Moeen
Woakes
Broad
Anderson
Despite Moeen's average overall stats, in England he does average 38 with the bat and 33 with the ball (compared to 28 and 51 away) which makes him a handy all rounder in home conditions. Therefore, he'll most likely perform well this summer at home.

2019 Ashes series will be his last. If we lose that, he truly is agent Bayliss!
Baylis needs to do one we need to start a fresh we have to get some younger cricketers in who are hungry for the battle and who are motivated by a younger coach how dare Baylis say he’s gonna leave the job in 2019 we will be the judge of that with this England team it is way to cosy feathers have to be ruffled a coach has to earn there huge wage not just coast through to the end of there contract
NZ condtions should suit us a lot more. However, for me , Test cricket is all about the Ashes. We now need to build towards the 2019 home series and also the next away series.
We have 3 major issues.
Spin:
We must persevere with Crane. If Ali comes back into the team as the sole spinner, we are falling back into the trap of using a containing spinner.
Pace:
We need pace, why people are only just getting this I will never know. We can live without it in our conditions but it is essential the Stones, Gartons, Jamie Overtons of this world remain fit and get a chance/fast tracked.
Top 4:
Sick of us being 3 down for 30 - Been the same for the last 2-3 years. Cook remains and will be fine. Stoneman and Vince have had a good chance and for me just don't have the technique.
Who are Englands best 2 batsmen? Root and Bairstow. Get them in the top 4.
Foakes is a class keeper/batsman - He can take over at 7.
Garton is not ready but has the raw materials. He has been fast tracked and therefore we need to stick with him. Stop packing the squad with early 80 swing bowlers and get some lads in with variation and pace. Jamie Overton and Garton need to be in every squad injury permitting. They are not an instant fix, but part of the solution.
Cook
Hameed
Root C
Bairstow
Malan
Stokes
Foakes WK
C. Overton
J. Overton
Crane
Anderson
Squad:
Lawrence
Livingstone
Broad
T. Curran
Garton
Ali
Juggle it about a bit.
Cook, stoneman, root, malan, bairstow, livingstone, woakes, Jones, Broad, crane, Anderson.
My XI would be Cook, Stoneman, Root, Bairstow, Malan, Stokes, Ali, Woakes, Broad, Leach, Anderson.
We may as well carry on for now with Stoneman but Hameed is definitely the future.
Moeen had a bad series but so did everyone, wasn't too long ago that he was terrific in winning man of the series vs South Africa.
Still lacking pace but we can't just pick a bowler because he can send the ball down consistently at 90mph. Again, we've got some promise here but not enough to warrant any being picked ahead of the other 3 seamers until they're fit and firing.
How long can we ignore Leach?
Leach should have had a run by now. One but of caution is that his wicket is Taunton which is by far the most seam friendly wicket in the country (to the extent they also play Bess). But agree he is good.

There seemed to be some issues with Leach's action. Assuming those are settled he's someone who should be looked at. For now, Crane - who did OK in a difficult situation - should be first in line for a spinning spot.

Unfortunately not, he's saying he's saying he will remain until the end of his contract which runs out September 2019.
England could of course get rid of him before then. They should be getting rid of him now and building towards that series. Now it looks like we're going to be rebuilding after it although you have to fancy us at home.
Leach did have to correct his action which he did and still took a lot of wickets. The initial issue was that England thought he didn't have the right mentality. Now if that's the case then it's a huge worry as England players are pretty mentally weak as it is so if they view someone as mentally not right then they must be pretty fragile.
Agree that Taunton is a spinners paradise to a point where they have quite often played 3 spinners (not just Bess but Van Der Merwe too) at times but Leach remains as their premier spinner away from home and still does pretty well.
In other news, I was away at the start of November so completely missed the fact that Chris Silverwood is taking over as bowling coach following the Ashes (although announced on 1st Nov). He's an excellent appointment, hopefully it's a stepping stone for him to step into the head coach role.
Travesty that Crane was chosen ahead of Leach. He just isn't the right "fit" if you know what i mean.

we really need to start trawling the counties for nugget players though...if Bayliss can be bothered
Not impressed with Bayliss in Test matches but George Dobell summed it up well - The issue is Strauss and Harrison and their reluctance to convert the domestic calendar, pitches and overall mindset to be more adaptable overseas.
Personally wouldn't mind the idea of split coaches, allowing Bayliss to continue in limited overs.

I had a similar thought....who would you suggest
Gillespie would be great but he's obviously got eyes on the Aussie job.
I've been banging the drum for him so he'll probably be rubbish but Silverwood coming into the side as bowling coach seems like a good opportunity to get him in and around the team before stepping up when Bayliss steps down (if he doesn't go before then).
I just hope we don't go back to Moores again.
No chance of Moores.. I personally would give Strauss the job himself. Or bring in Nasser.. The players have the ability otherwise they wouldn't get picked. Its the mental strength they lack..
Under Cook and Bayliss England went back to being pu ssies again.. We need a personality a leader.. Root cant do it all himself.
Can't see Strauss stepping down from his director role to be head coach of England. Hussain has got it pretty easy as a commentator, although I think he'd do a decent job as he made us a tough outfit under Fletcher.
I think that's unfair on Cook, the guy is mentally tough, yes he was very pragmatic in his leadership but he was a guy you could rely on. I'd say he's more mentally tough than Root but Root could go onto become a better captain. Time will tel..
Good question. I would have given Gillespie all 3 formats as he woulsn't accept just 1.
If I went abroad Langer possibly, but he seems high up in the likely replacement for Lehmann.
So I would look English. We have Silverwood in as bowling coach and Farbrace as Assistant. That has quality. Not sure in all honesty who is available and suitable.
