rating the deer hunter much higher 2nd watch.

the trick with it, is not to sit wondering when the war bits going to start. it's actually quality right through if you watch it for what it is.

anyone watched Barry Lyndon ?

i'll give Barry Lyndon a 9.25.

0.5 off for the slow first hour, and 0.25 for the damn jingle the whole way through.

it's a great film, in my kubrick top 5, and is probably an all-time top 10 in terms of the cinematogrophy.

what other would rival it for cinematography ?

from the same era I can think of Badlands and Deer Hunter, might offer some kind of competition but not push it too hard. Alien was quite impressive, but again not in the same league.

More recently Cinema Paradiso is quite impressive. Blue Velvet, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.

I can't think of anything that touches Barry Lyndon though.

Also I'd say it's by a million miles Kubrick's best movie?

it has a very good claim, i've always liked paths of glory, and do enjoy the shining and clockwork orange, whether i prefer 2001 or barry lyndon probably depends on my mood more than anything.

i wouldn't like to rank the below, but would throw in:

2001
andrei rublev
touch of evil
night of the hunter
apocalypse now
once upon a time in the west
vertigo
suspiria
the third man
the conformist
the fall
neon demon
only god forgives

and special mentions for sorrentino (the great beauty, youth, the consequences of love) and malick (though i dislike him as a director, but badlands/days of heaven/tree of life.

oh, and almost forgot nic roeg (walkabout and don't look now).

if you just wanted to take a single random frame from a film and hang it on your wall, you could certainly do a lot worse than barry lyndon.

Never seen it. That’s the one with just natural lighting isn’t it…I’ll add it to the list

used a lot of candles, which required special lenses on the cameras, for sure it's a very unusually - and beautifully - shot film

Some interesting looking suggestions there. Many I haven't seen. Did not get into surprisia

For me the single most beautiful scene I think would be between the Russian roulette scenes at the end of deer hunter, or the duel between lyndon and her son. So many to choose from in lyndon though, of course including the candle scenes which are also stunning.

I thought it was good but nothing special. Incredible that it’s a true story though
