Just thinking, I think my earliest pick would be Buster Keatons The General.. or Laurel and Hardy.
Hmm.. might give it a shot..
Top directors off the top of.my head were
1. Visconti
2. Antonioni
3. I think it was David Lean next
4. Then after Lean it was Scorsese
Film with the most images was Visconti's the Leopars (I think 25) then Lawrenfe of Arabia with 14 and I think Sunset Boulevard was next with 9.
The Lighthouse from 2019 had 7 or 8.
So when I younger, me and my mates used to go to an image shop up central London, called Hollywoods.
And it would be a £1 a photo..
And I got some great stills from my favourites.
The opening of Once upon a time in the West the view from behind all 3 hitman looking at Charlie Bronson.
12 Angry Men, with all 12 in shot at the table.
To Jaws..
I’ve still got them all, must bought over a hundred images. Make me want to dig them out…
that must have been cool
Can cheat with the Internet these days!
If I was going for iconic then I'd definitely have used Jaws, but the production non it's not that great. I think the only Speilberg I used was a shot in ET where the friendly FBI doctor is leaning over Eliot and you see Eliot reflected in his visit.
I did use one from OATITW which was a close up of Frank's face when he meets Bronson. It is a beautiful movie but it's really about faces, and faces movies go back to 1928 and Joan of Arc which I used I think 8 of.
I did get a shot of a drop of water dripping off the ceiling from the opening scene of OUATIW but although I was pleased with myself for snapping it it wasn't that good an image. Same with Begbi's pint glass in Trainspotting.
Oh yeah regarding Leone I also used 4 from For a Few Dollars more. 3 of the bank scene, and 1 of the wanted poster with the laughing face. I may also have used the good guy smoking a pipe, I can't remember if it made the cut or not without my laptop. Was right on the cusp that one.
Oh man memories.. I’ve got that too Close up of Jack, drinking water from his hat while waiting for the train to pull in.
Spencer Tracy in Bad Day in Black Rock, looking like a badass with his one armed self eating attempting to eat soup while Ernest Borgnine giving him shiiit.
Harrison Ford crouching on top of the Police Car in Blade Runner.. My Jaws pics I love, cos that’s my fav film..

You right, the Internet changed the game. Hollywoods doesn’t exist no more,
But it doesn’t beat looking through thousands of quality pics/posters and buying them and walking out the shop.

Yeah I agree that is a very cool shot. I did look at it or a similar one, but will check it out again when I get my laptop back. That is the sort of thing which makes the list.
You are right. There are shots in that opening sequence of OUATITW which should be in the list.
I don't allow shots with any titles on them which slightly affects which ones can be taken, but there is still plenty of very high quality material to be used.
I am revisiting it, although god knows what I'm going to take out.
I don't know what I was playing at when I reviewed that scene the first time. It's top quality, and the equivalent in that film of the bank scene in AF$M (I don't like it quite as much personally but it's comparable).
I have 3 images I could definitely include in my 500, and the one you linked is marginal as a possibly 4th.
The 3 are:
-gormless station agent
-guy with his hand in the trough with the water tank in the background
-close up of Bronson
they are of the standard I've been looking for anyway, although whether they are better than any I have already I need to check
Cool, glad to help your image collection selection.
OUTITW has a lot of great imagery. What you expec with John Ford eh..
Just to add, all my Photos I bought were all black and white.. I was very much into photography and was amazed how different B&W adds to the scene than Colour.
the coat on the guy on the left as we look is stunning. dont know what fabric it is but the light and tone is gorgeous. and the cut of it.
i could easily use 5 from that scene (including Bronson with and without the harmonica), but I don't have room.
I can live without the station master. I can live without bronson sans harmonica.
I feel I should include the other 3, and will try to find 3 to take out tomorrow.
I also have to look at the James Cameron space film which I'd previously assumed was all CGI. So that's potentially more I need to lose which I don't know how I'm going to do tbh.
No room for the great Jason Robards then?
Which then leads me All The Presidents Men.
Great photo of Hoffman, Redford, Robards & legend Martin Balsam.
Which then takes me to The Sting….

Oh yeah agree.
I mean ultimately from a visual perspective it's all about the use of light, right?
I have 2 shots in my 500 which are just a light. One from the lighthouse, one from Alphaville.
I have several of candles (mostly Barry Lyndon and also the Lighthouse).
I have mirrors and reflections, shadows, contrasts.
It's all about light, and the light does show better in black and white.
They have more sharpness and more contract too.
Yeah I think Leone is more skilled in images than Ford. I have a couple of My Darling Clementine and a couple from She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, but he did nothing as striking as Leone's feature scenes.
I've got about 160 black and white. Love the 40s and 50s.

Oh damn, why did I say Ford!! Duh, of course it was Leone. I saw Man Who Shot Liberty Valance not long ago, so must’ve still had him on my mind.
From the 40s I’ve got 2 images from Hitchcocks Rebecca and Rope.
50’s think it’s 12 Angry Men, Bad Day at Black Rock, To Catch a Thief, Roman Holiday. I know I got more, can’t remember though…
