Jamie Carragher's England World Cup XI

“The debate” show on sky sports where he picked this is first class. Him and G Nev last night and then Sherwood and Murphy tonight. It’s brilliant. So interesting. If you haven’t been watching them, do.

People are down on England but there’s an awful lot of talent dotted about who are top players:

Kane
Alli
Sterling
Walker
Rose

Next bracket down there’s quality too, top 6 team players:

Lallana
Wilshere
Dier
Stones
Cahill
Rashford
Lingard

Supplemented with the best of the rest:

Vardy
Pickford
Maguire
Bertrand

That’s not a squad to be sniffed at from a country. The challenge is making a team out of that and I don’t mean fitting them in to a formation. Play like a team. So important at international level particularly where countries with lesser players than what we have available are beating us.

Not enough time now unfortunately and Southgate doesn’t inspire me either. If Pep or Klopp or Poch or Conte or Jose has this group of players to take to a tournament I’d say it would have a chance.

Yes on paper there are countries with stronger and deeper squads..France’s squad depth is unreal, but they can’t all play. A front 3 of Kane, Alli and Sterling is comparable to anything other countries have but nobody will have it cos it’s fun to bash England.

Going by performances this season:

Pickford
Walker Stones Cahill Bertrand
Dier
Sterling Dele Lingard Rashford
Kane

Pace, energy and pressing. Dier there for protection when fullbacks overlap. Wilshere and Lallana are slick, but not fast enough. Henderson is an all rounded player, but doesn’t excel at anything.

Panama and Tunisia will sit back against us so need to move the ball up the field quickly. Hopefully score plenty goals and then change formation and team against Belgium, play for a draw and win group on goal difference.

Sorry but that midfield just wouldn't work. It's basically 4 at the back, Dier in midfield and then 5 attackers!

I would 100% have Wilshere in the team if fit.

Lots of average options, yes.

I`ve been impressed with Gomez, he has looked good in a team of 12 men but it remains to be seen if he step up to England level.

We`ll probably end up shifting Dier from his preferred DM role back to CB to accommodate Horrendo

Maguire, Jones and Gomez are all having good seasons. Dier and Cahill in reality are above average options as well.

It seems Southgate is intent on going with 3 at the back so:

Butland
Stones, Jones, Cahill*
Walker, Dier, Lallana/Wilshere*, Rose*
Alli, Sterling
Kane

A few ifs and buts in there such as Cahill’s form and the likes of Rose, Lallana and Wilshere getting decent minutes and form between now and May.

Wouldn’t have the likes of Lingard in the squad. The best month of his career and people start to get excited ffs. At 25 he’s less than a year younger than Neymar, not some exceptional kid who’s forced his way into the United team.
