Eubank Jr is a volume puncher but he has a lot more in his arsenal. He has speed, decent chin and mentally he is the stronger out of the two. What will be interesting is how Groves fares in the later rounds because we know he gets tired where as Jr has incredible conditioning and he will be throwing a lot of punches late on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
mentally I dont think he is stronger than groves, and there is nothing to suggest otherwise. According to Eubank and his team the reason he lost to BJS was all mental, he didnt working in the fight earlier on due to his mental state, it was nothing to do with his fitness, he knew he was in terms of endurance far better than BJS but didnt start working until he was miles behind on the scorecards despite being told to over and over again in the corner by Tibbs. The fact that he thinks that he knows better than those far more experienced than him shows mental weakness also.
Groves has been at this level for a lot longer than Eubank, he knows what it takes mentally.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jr lost to Saunders because he was inexperienced, not because he was mentally weak. There is a difference there that should not be overlooked. Groves is the seasoned fighter but that doesn't mean he is the mentally stronger one. Groves has not been the same man since Froch broke him and you can see it in his disposition and performances. It will take a lot more to break Jr than it will groves in my opinion
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes it could have been inexperience but he also thinks he knows better than those more experienced than him which has been proven to be not true. If he had listened to his corner against BJS it may have been a different fight, although I think BJS will always have his number.
Groves can do what BJS did and make the fight easier on himself. Eubank still has massive problems with his right elbow, meaning he really struggles to throw a straight right, this is why you see him so uppercut and right hook happy. I think he has a hyper extension problem, has had it for years now.
If Groves keeps it long he can win with the straight punches much like BJS did. If Eubank wants to over commit Groves will be ready for it. Early Eubank will be very wary of stepping in to close the distance due to the early power Groves carries. Groves will fade more down the straight so it will be an interesting fight.
In terms of the final I dont think Smith is anywhere near as good as Hearn thought he might turn out to be but he huge at SMW and can knock anyone out in that division. Groves has the power to stop Smith IMO.
tough one to call this, I'm going Groves though, KO later rounds or points win..
Eubank looks the part, and is quicker, will throw more punches but will miss a lot, this will tire him I think for the later rounds...
also Eubank not actually faced anybody of Groves skill / talent / ring craft, so a Eubank win would be a surprise to me..
I saw somebody mention above that he has a decent chin? - really? - when has this been tested then?
for me Groves just has too much for Eubank, add the fact that Groves is natural at super-middle-weight.

Eubank does have a decent chin to be fair. Spike landed flush on it and he can bang a bit, not a huge puncher but he is heavy handed. Eubanks has tremendous stamina also I think he will struggle especially in the first 4/5 rounds to get inside of Groves. Groves will keep it long and look to land hard on Eubank as he tries to close the distance. If I was Groves the very first time that Eubank gets in close with him is tie him up, and throw him around and onto his ass, take a warning for it but it will make Eubank realise "yup thats never happened to me before, this guy is strong"
For me its Groves to lose he can keep it long and technical for the first half of the fight get a good lead whilst he is fresh and then spoil from say round 7/8 onwards. Fans might not like it much but it would be his best chance for an easy night IMO.

totally agree with that point delboy
either way, for me this is the closest contest this year..
well actually, despite media popular consent, I think Ortiz Wilder is closer than many think.. Ortiz may just have his number... but thats for a different thread
Ortiz just looked so $hit on them 2 hean shows though and he's about 40, think Briggs would be more competitive than Ortiz

That fight will be boring as hell IMO, Wilder wont engage much and jab Ortix head off. It will be much like the first Stiverne fight. Wilder on the back foot for pretty much the whole fight ala Malik Scott
well i'd agree with that Delboy maybe a year or so ago however Wilder needs to win well in order to get his 'pay day' with AJ... so I think Wilder will try finish it very quickly, which of course could be dangerous in the ring with Ortiz....
yeah Oscar I agree he's a bit slow but like I said above I think Wilder will leave himself too open trying to 'look fortuitous' and Ortiz could well plant one on him... nobody is actually sure if Wilder can take that kind of shot yet!
this fight is key for Wilders pay day, so this is why I don't think its as cut and dry...
on a different note - I do like Briggs but he's 46 now?? - think Ortiz is 38??
*look Ferocious* - bloody auto correct

hmmm not so sure as long as he has that belt then he is in line for the AJ payday.
I cant see Wilder risking getting his whiskers tested against Ortiz is all. I have seen Wilder rocked by guys who cannot bang as hard as him. this is why i think Wilder will take no chances. I dont think anyone for sure knows his age I think i remember Ortiz or one of his team saying he is actually 46 or something !!
yeah has been rocked before, and if caught by Ortiz I'm pretty sure he'll be floored... so in that sense you could be right, maybe he will take it steady.... and yeah he has that belt so AJ will come after him regardless but I seems to remember that Wilder was arguing about the purse split, and if he doesn't win big vs Ortiz it will be harder for him to get any sort of percentage...
which by the way I disagree with, in my view both fighters should get 50/50 (in Wilder and AJ's case) but thats a different debate haha....
if Wilder wins big vs ortiz it would give him more clout to say "pay me 35-40%, look how a smashed them up in my last two fights"
hahaha just realized we've totally gone off topic...
sooooo yeah, Groves to win Saturday night hahaha
Sorry, just another point ref Wilder vs Ortiz - just see how Parker lost clout with his last two points win fights... I think the purse split negotiations would of been better for his team if he'd of dispatched Hughie Fury and that massive guy (I forget his name) he used to spar with in a couple of rounds, or with vicious KO's

There will be a strength difference but I don't think it will be that pronounced. If Groves is having to clinch early on, then that will mean he is in for a very long night. Groves needs to pump that jab and keep JR at the end of it in the early stages.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Groves will have about 10/12 lbs on Jnr come fight night at least IMO. I didnt say he should make it a clinching match to start of with I said when he is fresh he should clinch him once just show Eubank he is the bigger man, even rough him up a bit, and take a warning. Not only to show Eubank he is stronger but I think Eubank is the sort who see's that as a challenge and step up without thinking about the boxing. I agree for as long as he can Groves must keep the fight long and straight. As I said Eubank has real trouble throwing the straight right due to his elbow problems. He should just use the BJS bluebrint, use the feet to keep himself in engagement range to land the straight right and jabs. Groves will tire though and Eubank will take over (assuming Groves doesnt KO him) Groves needs to make sure he gets a big enough lead and keep enough in the tank to see him down the stretch.

Weigh in
For what it’s worth, Eubank Jr came in heavier at the weigh-in.
I’m going for Groves in points. Think he’ll make the size advantage count and let’s not discount his power too. If he lands clean on Eubank Jr he could do some damage. Eubank probably has more in the tank when it comes to stamina but while he talks the talk about being ready for this stage, he’s never been in a fight as big as this whereas Groves has.
Should be a great fight.
