I was at Wembley for both the 87 and 88 finals and remember clearly Charlie Nicholas' 2 scuffed goals which won us the trophy in the first final and Nigel Winterburn's missed pen in the 8 final.
Perry Groves scared the crap out of Alan Hansen
Went to the 87 Final.Charlie Nicholas was certainly a big time Charlie.Didn't do much and from memory only scored around 30 goals in five seasons as I can recall. A big let down when we expecting much better. Still not got over the disappointment of the defeat by Birmingham in 2007. My sons first cup final. However we have made up for it lately.
1987 felt like the beginning of something special. We had a young team and an ambitious manager. Perhaps without the 87 victory we wouldn't have had 1989 as the team really grew that day and realised that Liverpool weren't unstoppable.
Curious that Wenger has never won this cup. Has he always played a 2nd team since he took charge? Circa your PL winning days
Yes, pretty much.
"The Football League look like winning their battle to win back a UEFA Cup place for the eventual winners of the tournament that Wenger turned into the Joka-Cola Cup.
The Arsenal coach openly defied the rules by fielding weakened teams, with Chelsea equally guilty, until London's pair were within a round of Wembley."
This was from 98 when Arsenal lost to Chelsea over two legs of the semi.
We, of course, played a weakened team even in the final vs Chelsea.
The funny thing is, despite the weakened line ups, we still have 3 finals, 4 other semi finals and about 8 quarters in the Wenger years

Where did the word "achievement" come into it?
Arsenal have had some weird results in this comp over the last 10 years or so, the final with Birmingham, that reading game, the battering at Sheff Weds and the defeat at Bradford.
Is there any top team who hasn't had "weird results" in this? Being the 4th priority, and playing kids and reserves opens every club up to 'unexpected' results.
I remember Luton beating Arseanl in the league cup final with Stein scoring, as a utd fan thats my earliest memory of Arsenal.

Really? So United losing 4-0 to MK Dons is less weird? Or 3-0 to York City? Losing to Southend?
Liverpool going out to Northampton, Grimsby?
The game is notorious for Arsenal ending the 144 match winning run when Ian Rush scored Liverpool had enjoyed.

I did say in the last 10 years
It's Wenger's year to end his LC and European trophy drought........ and then sign another extension.
