Transfer business in retrospect

Look how the Ox is doing. Walcott hasn't done too bad at Everton and Giroud deserved more game time when with you.

You have a decent enough team/squad. Decent enough to challenge for top4 and then you add Lacazette, Miki and Auba and you should really be higher than you are.

We all know what the problem is.

But, you should have bought a top quality DM (such as Kante when he left Leicester) and a better keeper (buttland?) and centre half. It's not as if you don't have the money.

Auba was signed as a face saving exercise due to having to sell Sanchez.

Mhki was money saving exercise due to having to sell Sanchez.

Neither transfer was a carefully worked out strategy.

In isolation the signings and sales are not bad. The Sanchez "sale" was poorly handled though.

but what was really needed was a DCM player that help with the shape and defence and another CB.

this summer whoever is in charge needs a new GK, DCM player and CB. A new spine for the team. the rest is workable but not without those additions.

Be interesting to see these players with a new coach though. They cannot all be rubbish

Fully agree to be honesty.

Also agree with the OP. Our January transfer window was a disaster.

Too long we believe to secure top4 (these days it's all about top 4, not only for Arsenal but some are pathetic to say it) through the PL.

If we were realistic we should have put all on the EL card and let the PL go.

To let three offensive players go in one window and replace him with one striker who isnt allowed to play in he EL was a brain fart.

Auba is a top striker, much better than Laca. Jury's out on Mkhi

Even if we'd spent £200m net we would still be rubbish. We've managed to turn Auba into Chamakh in little over a month.

We needed to buy defensively.....

Not to fussed over the summer/winter transfer dealings. Sanchez was always going to leave and to a rival. Just happened that United trumped City.

Like LexBabez said, Auba and Mkhit were just face saving signings. Plenty of time for both to bed in and show their worth.

I'm a bit peeved we got rid of Giroud and kept Iwobi and Welbeck. Never rated OG but he was a decent backup striker and especially for Europa. Cannot understand the decision to get rid of him.

Walcott and Ox had to be sold. Neither really fulfilled their promise and were just wasted at Arsenal.

However, we should have sorted out at least a DM and a CB, if possible a GK. The fact we did neither is near on negligent and significantly contributed to this poor season. Continually having to play Xhaka as a DM and Mustafi & Chambers at CB has cost us.

Giroud replaced by Auba is a great bit of business but the damage was done in significantly reducing our attacking strength with the sales of Sanchez and to a lesser degree Ox and Walcott. Selling COq was also a mistake. As I said on the post about away form, the injury to Santi and his replacement by Xhaka was the start of the bad form we are currently stuck in. It took a number of games after Santi got injured, which we were still doing well in, and then Xhaka came in and that run started after one win with him in (look at the thread if you dont know what I mean.

So I stand by my opinion from before that window opened that our biggest priority should have been a CM to replace Xhaka in the starting 11. It was true last summer window, last winter window and is still true now.

We didnt replace Giroud. We replaced Laca in the first place. Missed the point....not suprised.

Anyone following the club over the past couple of years knows that there's been an ongoing mutiny when it comes to contract renewals. It can only get worse with the 2019 contracts running out.

As a result, were always due for a wholesale shedding of players.

I know the current side is notoriously imbalanced, but I can't really complain about the players we've brought in this season.

Other than Mavropanos whom we haven't really seen, players like Aubameyang, Kolasinac, Lacazette and Mkhitaryan make the basis for a pretty decent side.

Transfer window was horrendous

Losing Walcott, Sanchez and Giroud and relying on 2 new strikers to get us champions league football was suicidal.

Ffs we have to call on Welbeck and Iwobi

I said it in January. The transfer window left is weaker

On the other hand, the club wasnt going to sit back and wait for the entire squad to run their contracts down.

It's nice to see a little long-term thinking at the club for once. We can expect more of the same over the summer.

I think Auba will be a good striker for us, he doesn't concern me. I worry about Mhiki, he was horrible for utd and bar the everton game is playing exactly the same as he was at utd.

I just we get a new manager before Auba's contract is up or he throws a wobbly.

I also think that replacing Santi with Xhaka was the biggest factor for our performance. We used to be really comfortable when teams pressed us high with Santi. Now with Xhaka that's not the case. This combined with one of the highest number of errors directly leading to goal in the league by him is a deadly combination. I don't understand why we signed him in the first place as the guy is not even a DM and never will be.

Idiot. We SOLD Giroud and BOUGHT Auba. How do you justify saying that a player leaving and another joining to take his squad place is not replacing that player? Laca is still in the squad. Is your love of Giroud still distorting your mind?

We actually handled the Sanchez, Giroud, Miki, Auba saga very well (given our options).

This issue however was not addressing the weaknesses in the defensive side of our squad. A winger would also have been very helpful too.

But really poor management is our biggest weakness by a mile. Hard to know what level the squad really is with them being used so poorly and with the players heads gone.
