So...Atletico...the nightmare draw

For me being at home first has as good as killed our chances. You saw Wenger's comments about being at home first vs CSKA. Can you imagine him tactically vs Simeone?

We will have to push the home advantage in the first leg and nick a win. Then defend for our lives at the Calderon.

We're facked. His style of management (among many others...) is kryptonite to Wenger.

They'll sit narrow and deep while we lump crosses at an isolated striker. They'll then counter and score.

Wenger says Mkhi should be back in 2 weeks.

Costa seems to have picked up a hamstring injury. So there's hope.

Which will make it all the more heartbreak when Mustafi gets sent off early and we lose the first leg 4-0.

We need long ball tactics for this game. Pulis and Allardyce.

Play Welbeck up front and Laca just behind. Quick early long balls and play the game in Atletico's half.

Arsenal have better chance over two legs then one match where Ath would tactically kill Wenger...but over two legs tactics can fail.

They are not a special team and apart from the odd star in their team, there isn’t much to fear.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Fun fact, they are only 5 points off what the invincibles would be at this stage of the season They are a very decent team.

They’re no longer at the Calderon as they’ve moved into their new ground the Wanda metropolitano.

Will be a tough tie for you lot but you never know.

And Celtic are 2 points off. What exactly is your point?

Atletico are unbelievable defensively, they have only conceded 15 goals in 31 games this season. To put that into perspective, Arsenal have conceded 17 since the start of the year.

Arsenal need to create a hostile atmosphere in the first leg and try and get a decent lead for the first leg. But Welbeck and Lacazette are gonna have their work cut out.

We’ll have to try take advantage at set plays as well, I’ve read they aren’t that good defending them. Also we have got a bit better at scoring them. Furthermore they have more to play for in the league than us. They are still mathematically in with chance of winning the league, but also they’ll want to ensure they finish about Real Madrid. They are guaranteed CL football next year, so the desire to win Europa might not be quite as much as our desire, coupled with a bit of tiredness from going for it more in the league. Because we fecked up the league, we have luxury of resting players before Europa. I’m not sure they’ll rotate quite as much as us.

It’s all very small margins, but it’s certainly no forgone conclusion that we will lose. It’s important the players aren’t in awe of them, and believe we can be the better side. They aren’t exactly light years ahead of us in terms of quality. The main fear is just wenger has no idea how to counter the tactics they use

Well in football especially at this stage you don't write off anybody. But in Arsenal's case, the dream is over. Atletico are a solid team with a super star striker. This is a team that has made 2 CL finals in past 4 seasons, one of which they were a minute away from winning. Same team who won the league at Nou Camp. A manager who is as pragmatic as they come.

I don't back our chances one bit.

You can't just completely rule Arsenal out, Atletico lost at home to this Chelsea side in the champs league, finishing 3rd in that group. They also drew at home to Qarabag. Their form has improved considerably since then, especially at home, but it's no foregone conclusion.

Knowing arsenal we will beat them and then lose to Salzburg in the final.

Diego Costa wasn't part of their CL campaign. So it's a different team.

It's a football game and a semi-final.
Roma were not supposed to win. Juve were not likely to score three at Madrid.
We had no hope last year against Man City and Chelsea for the FA Cup.

It’s a much bigger game for us. We have to win it, it’s could be wengers last chance to salvage his job for next season, it’s the only thing we can win, and our only hope to get CL. So I see us either being incredibly up for it, and putting in a great performance. Or crumbling under the pressure and getting a battering, especially away. When we’ve been crap in recent years, there’s been plenty of times we’ve been seen as certain to lose, then we pull out a top class performance. But on the other hand, there’s been the times when we’ve completely bottled it in those situations.

Starting Xhaka in either leg would be a disaster, Simeone would be targeting him

posted on 13/4/18

Well on current form Xhaka has to play just because of how awful Jack has been lately

posted on 13/4/18

In a one off game and a Herculean effort from players and a bit of luck you could beat Atletico

But over two legs the better team will win

posted on 13/4/18

The better team wins over 2 legs? You just spanked City home and away...

posted on 13/4/18

Arsenal need to start well, if Atletico take an early lead in the first leg then Arsenal will be chasing shadows all night.

posted on 13/4/18

Agree with the OP that it's better to play them over two legs. People expect Atletico to win against Arsenal. For me personally the frustration over a loss would be less in the semifinal in comparision to lose a potential final against them. They are favourites its no secret.

Will they destroy us as people suggest ....mmhh we will see. When we defend like we did against Moskow we wont have a chance. All depend on what Arsenal turn up. Hope we have all player available including Mhiki.

Jack in his current form is a no go. We cant afford to lose the ball in midfield like he did the last few games. That will be deadly. We must keep possession and win the duels in midfield. That will be the key,

I know Arsenal are not very good at the moment but am I missing something about this Atletico team? The same one that played Sporting Lisbon over two legs and was a bit lucky to go through? Sporting murdered them last night. Wenger and Arsenal may as well still capitulate to Atletico as they could to any other side but please you guys should stop making it sound like Arsenal aw due to face a Barca/Real select eleven.

Leicester City also battered them in the return leg last season They are more a lucky side if anything. I am sure Pep Bayern battered them as well but they scraped through.
