Not really. Avengers was at its best when it focused on Loki
I liked the Thanos arc but the least compelling bits where when the heroes fought big CGI armies in Wakanda and then Avengers Compound.
No stakes no feeling
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would agree, that cgi army was cheap, some aliens not once referenced in any other movie, suddenly thousands of them storming the avengers. Just felt a bit plastic, nicely done but plastic and hollow..
I mean Thor coming back with the axe was badazz but the sub LOTR stuff before was just silly tbh.

I guess they didn’t, but it just felt like really cheap cannon fodder with absolutely no back story, fx filler if you will, and to save money it was exactly the same fx model x10,000. No individuality. Just felt really cheap (though I know it most definitely wasn’t in real (money) terms- probably why it was the same model)

Aye. The axe in infinity war is a fantastic entrance scene, one of the best.
There are some great cgi moments, but cgi doesn't make a great movie.
Has to be an interesting enough story as well and a lot of these things arent that interesting.
Also I watched Prey and it was pretty darn good.
Finally, me and Greg agree on something.
What you reckon the budget for Prey was?
I’m thinking no more than 50 million....
Watching Prey tomorrow night after work

Disagree. The following scenes all had stakes:
Avengers assemble scene and the NY battle
Iron man vs Thanos in IF
Thor arriving on Wakanda
Avengers assemble in Endgame and then battle montage
Thanos vs Iron man/Cap/Thor
Iron man vs Hulk in Ultron
Started watching Prey but it was getting too ridiculous.

How else can you portray large scale battles? The aliens are used to give the Avengers something to showcase their abilities. We don't need the backstory of each alien.
It's not just the MCU that does it either. LOTR, Harry Potter,Star Wars, 300, Avatar, planet of the apes,Gladiator.

Practical and physical effects are a big part too, I agree.
The fact Batman fought everyone with heft and physicality and with a camera that wasn't cutting all the time was such a joy
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The combat in Batman was average for me. He looked slow and ponderous and most if not all was shot in the dark, so you can't see anything.
John Wick done it better, as did Civil War and Winter Soldier. The hand to hand combat scene between Cap and Winter Soldier is still one of the best I have seen in recent times.
I enjoyed Prey. It took a lot of the same elements that Predator 1 utilised and the sound work is amazing. There are points that require you to suspend all logic but overall, it was a return to form, for the franchise. In terms of rankings, I'd place it behind Predator 1 and Predators.

Firm disagree.
Batman fighting in The Batman was top notch, in all frame and looked brutal and looked like real fighting.
You also compare it to John Wick, which is an R-rated action movie which is deliberately over the top and kind of fantastical.
Night club fight was excellently lit for example.
Whole movie was tbh.
Issues with third act and the script, but cinematography, editing and choreography is excellent.

Those films did manage some individuality of the enemies. in LOTR the they’a lot of the orcs looked distinct, and I’m not surprised as in every way it was vastly superior. Gladiator by virtue of enemies as human enemies, the rest was distance shots so you can’t tell. Star wars got away with it as storm troopers had suits, much of the blue army in avatar looked different and the soldiers largely were in mechs . I understand why it was done that way, they wanted an epic battle in what was a mage expensive movie as is, so you cut a few corners, and hope people don’t notice. The other thing is the movies you listed are generally far better than infinity wars, avatar on a par I reckon.

Apart from the shaky cam in winter soldier, I agree.
Fighting is interesting when you feel a sense of stakes, and you actually care what's going on - which is normally defined by understanding why each side is fighting.
This is why Thanos was very compelling, but his CGI armies in Wakanda and the burned Avengers compound are not.
Plus obviously it having physically to it, and a sense of heft. Which The Batman managed and respectfully, the MCU rarely if ever does.
DC action is generally more compelling.
The Suicide Squad has expertly directed action - whatever your views of the movie.

Oh come on Pun, You have to see how it all plays out. For sure when you heard the premise your mind goes straight to, how is that gonna work.
But somehow, it works.
Started watching prey so far so good. Struck me that the predator race are basically like American big gane hunters on big hunts, have advanced weapons, can go camouflage (invisible) and basically travel far for a hunt trophy that they can kill something that would destroy them up close without any risk to themselves.
Pussssies, in other words.
