We don't even need anyone as good(because I don't think there is anyone). Just a capable midfielder!

Why didnt we go all out for Matuidi? Went for relative peanuts and would have solved so many of our problems

Please don't mention Bakayoko in the same breath as Kante.

As a neutral, I have to say, Kante is arguably the best player in the league. Sure he doesnt do what Salah and KDB may do in terms of goals and assists but the football intelligence he has is on a Makelele level - dare i say it - better.

but his quick forward passing, his passing range, and skill on the ball have all improved this year

Yes!! Especially in the last few months (which impressed me even more as we as a whole have been chit) Kante has really improved in his creative passing (not just creating chances but smart passes that progress play), his dribbling (well his dribbling was always good but he’s actually using it more), looking threatening and composed from the edge of the box in the final third. Not only that but he’s become more of a leader imo, more confident in himself to impact the game going forward when we’re struggling, not just defensively.

I’ve always thought of Kante previously as world class - but he’s world class at what he does. Great at winning ball back, but not really near other world class midfielders in other areas of play (although I also always thought he had it in him to improve that side of play). I think he’ll continue to improve next season and people will really start to notice him as more than just a ball winner if he keeps going on this trajectory.

He's wasted in a three man midfield, we saw elements of that last season before Conte changed formation.

It's amazing how we have a midfielder like that, and still manage to be in a situation where we can't play with two effectively because of the dross around him. That's pretty damn special tbh

He'd slow it down in possession, and would be completely wasted as the defensive screen.

But anything else forget about it. Gegenpressing in particular, he's custom built for it

Great player but if Chelsea miss out on top 4 then I do wonder about his future at Chelsea. He’s very ambitious and wants to play at the very top level - I believe he’s always had a desire to play for PSG. Maybe Real Madrid will be looking at him as well....

No he can’t. His offensive game is very average. A lot better then it was a year ago though.

Kante's expertise in possession is about recycling the ball or running with it. The point of tiki taka, even though it's not about moving the ball quickly towards the goal, is every pass and piece of movement from the midfield has to have a progressive purpose with dribbling as a last resort. Not Kante's game, hence he'd slow it down.

His natural role in the tiki taka set up would be as the holding player as generally they're the only one with license to recycle it. He'd do it, and do it bloody well, but it's such a waste of his energy.

So actually yeah I take it back. He can't play tiki taka, he's just too good for it
