World Cup - Goalkeepers very poor?

If Neuer was English and did that there would be effigies of him dangling from lampposts today

Utter clown of a keeper

Germany needed two goals in three minutes, Neuer’s mistake didn’t matter.

Certainly not the worst.

Reckon the Spanish would do the same to ddg after his errors too.

Worst - DDG (Not ABU but he's not reached his PL level)

Best - Yann Sommer. Made save of the tournament yesterday.

Have some sympathy for goalkeepers.

Even the best (DDG v Portugal for example) make mistakes. It’s ensuring inevitable miscalculations/errors of judgement etc. are kept to a minimum.

If an outfield player makes a mistake, it is often overlooked/inconsequential, but a goalkeeper error, will more often than not, result in a goal. The saves, claims, blocks etc which precede, forgotten, or overlooked.

I haven't been impressed by Pickford.

Assured with the ball at his feet but the more i watch him the less convinced he's a genuine top class keeper

Why? He played a major role in their 2014 World Cup win and the game was already lost when he made his error yesterday. He's still a legend and rightly so.

That isn't going to happen given his team's early exit. He looked good though, especially given his age.

Yes I would (deny) "he was a clown yesterday."

Yes he made a mistake. But would hardly refer to a goalkeeper of his pedigree as a "clown"

Neuer (a goalkeeper) was trying to dribble past midfielders in the opposition half, to call that a mistake is an understatement of epic proportions

That's the kind of keeper Neuer is, high risk, high reward.

He's fantastic but had a fair few injuries in his career so wouldn't be surprised if he's on the wind down already.

What about if he went to a kids party yday and performed as a clown?

It wouldn't define his career, but he still would have been a clown that day.

It was good value entertainment so it was. I’d like to see keepers try it more often. Was brilliant!

The outfield players weren’t able to do anything themselves so too right he should try and show them how it’s done. 3 minutes to go and two goals needed at the time, perfect time for it.

Yet you feel comparing Neuer to a slapstick circus performer, normally wearing outlandish make-up and costume, balanced??

Germany were minutes from going out of the World Cup. They were in a desperate situation. It was not in any shape or form normal match circumstances.

I think we can excuse his last ditched attempt to get Germany back into the game as an error.
