Enjoyed the last one too

Looking at the draw there is likely to be at least one underdog getting far

Too few goals from open play for me.

No side has looked exceptional either with Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, France all struggling.

For me, the best World Cup was 1998, but that could be because I was at Uni and ended up watching every knockout match in my holidays. And I had the game on PS1

Think the knockout games define a World Cup more than groups, so will leave this one until the end.

In my football watching lifetime:

USA 94
Mexico 86
France 98
Korea/Japan 02
South Africa 10
Brazil 14
Italia 90
Germany 06

Not sure really, am enjoying it but not convinced it is that special really and as others have said, good open play goals seem few and far between.

1990 was amazing for an England fan because of the amazing Nessun Dorma on the bbc, New Order, Gazza, Lineker, Waddle, Barnes and Bearsley in the same side.

But the rest of the tournament in the knockout stages, unfortunately, many matches ended up being 1-0 or penalties. Lots of fouling, diving and passing back to keeper (when it was allowed).

Group Stages were amazing though and I loved it.

Earliest memory is 82. Was maybe too young to properly analyse the football. I enjoyed Mexico too. The rest not so much, but I am enjoying this one, although I’ve probably only seen half the games. Haven’t watched England at all, but might watch tonight.

Mexico 86 was amazing, I was a bit too young to fully appreciate, but when I saw Maradona's goal against Belgium, I couldn't believe my eyes. Amazing player. I missed the England match, so never saw THAT goal until much later.

Also, VAR is far from perfect at the moment but it does add to the excitement doesn't it?

I know it’s all opinion - but how could anyone have 2010 above those three?

Can’t argue with your top two at all.

Maybe there should be an article on the worst one too.

For me, I find it very difficult to remember the 2010 World Cup. It's a shame because Spain were fantastic in Euro 2008, but I just couldn't get into the 2010 tournament at all.

06 didn't have anything about it and 90 was a borefest.
14 and 10 were pretty much the same level.

None of them were particularly fun, tbf.

I fell in love with the World Cup because of Mexico 86.

Yeah like you are that old to watch WC 98

I do find the 06 one a bit overrated as many people I know have said that was the best ever. It's one of those tournaments that started well and seemed to lose steam by the semi final stage.

I know why people find Italia 90 boring, but personally I loved it.

I was only 5 for Italia 90' so I don't remember it personally. Obviously seen a lot of stuff on the tele about it though.

My first proper World Cup was 94 and even though England didn't qualify it was still really enjoyable. I don't think I missed many games and I can still remember having a Roberto Baggio Italy shirt. He was my hero of the whole world cup even though it ended tragically for him and Italy in the final.

Seen a few more WCs than the OP...found most of them (the ones we have qualified for anyway) generally frustrating and a complete disappointment, save Italia 90, from an English point of view.
.
However this is the first one I've watched without any expectation of what I/we expect from England and its been a bit of a breath of fresh air. Also games are on at sensible times in the UK.

Not really bothered now when England crash-out (as they will) as we qualified quite comfortably and we seem to have won a bit of respect in the football world.

Well done Southgate for that anyway.

England?

I remember Argentina 78 been special as a kid. Ticker tape, Arie Hann, Mario Kempes and Luque, Scotland wanting their money back and that fixed match: Argy vs Peru.

And yes, England didnt qualify.

1974

It was when I learnt what German efficiency was all about.

The Dutch were playing total football and the German just ground out a win.

I loved 1998 because it's my first memory of Football, I was only six years old and I believe that's what made me fall in love with the sport
