This England side are very young and were against and old and Wiley Croatia midfield
As well as they being more skilful
Good age for England for improvement
----------------------------------------------------------------------
England's starting XI had an average age of just under 26 (I think) ... Croatia's was 29. Not THAT huge a gap, in all honesty.
Croatia were also playing their third extra-time in a row, having come out of a "Group of Death" involving Aregntina, Nigeria and Iceland. England had played ET once, had the luxury of resting their entire first XI for the Belgium game, and played 2 warm up gimme group games prior to that against arguably the 2 worst sides at the WC. Yet Croatia looked the fitter side the longer the SF went. Youth didn't seem to help there?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, Croatia surprised me with how much energy they had. They didn’t seem to tire whereas England did. Kind of wondering why that was the case.

Borrowed some of Russia’s training methods..

Chasing goats all day boosts your stamina levels.
The game was always going to be decided by fine margins, but once Croatia settled into the game, they took control.
I don't blame Southgate. England were just up against a better technical team and didn't take chances they had in the first half. It happens. Croatia had chances too which they never took.
Croatia let the ball do the work, we chased a lot, hence tired.
Was a proud World Cup from England, did very well, o Shane going out to a better team. Agree with wahl that this is a team on the up.
We had the chances to win the game, but it would have been against the run of play based on how the game went overall
Yup, Croatia had more chances than us in the end, denied atleast twice by Pickford for goalbound efforts.
Yeah...match stats would bear out the result...we just needed to capitalise on the time we were on top...which we could've

Nah, the Croatian players were running around a lot. And I don’t think the Croatian players were better, I just think the tactics were better.
People have gone on about Kane's missed chance and rightly so, but what about that Lingard effort when he couldn't even hit the target?
We never seem ruthless enough in front of goal and I don't know what that comes down to. Look at Germany beating the hell out of Brazil. They all look so confident in front of goal and know what to do. If that had been us we'd have still been looking at trying to convert a chance from open play up to the 90 minutes.
People are bound to remember the star player's miss more though. Barely anyone remembers Anderton hitting the post st Euro 96 thanks to Gazza's agonising miss.
Well the Kane chance was better but Lingard should have done better as well.
It think it’s nerves plus lack of experience. I noticed we kept messing up vital passes in the final third. I think that’s all due to the players being too anxious.
I thought Lingard's big game temperament would be a bonus for us. Turns out it was only useful against the might of Panama.

I was unaware of this phenomenon....I'll ensure I look for this next time I watch him
England are woefully weak in midfield, Alli & Lingard are clearly not up to standard and we need someone to take control in midfield, Henderson isn't good enough for that.
Wilshire at the top of his game could have been our man in midfield (leaving Henderson to play a supporting role) but had such an awful season and is far too much of a risk injury-wise.
GS did a grand job considering the limited pool of talent available.

When we had class in midfield we couldnt use it effectively...Gerrard lamps Scholes etc
Problem has always been the same. It's not the individual quality of the players, but the lack of balance.

They were definately better. Tactically I though we were better to start, but they grew into the game and eventually dominated it.

Have to disagree. They are not a better team than England. Tactically they outmanoeuvred us, but a different manager for England would have a solution for their change of tactics in the second half.
