I’d like to keep McGuire as long as possible as he is clearly a talented player and it would be good if that development was at Leicester.

There are elements, however, that are win/win for us. McGuire is undoubtedly talented, but definitely not the finished article. There were times last season when he was caught in possession, out of position or his decision making was questionable. Despite this there was always a chance that a big team would look at his potential and come in with a bid.

Not much has changed between then and now other than a handful of promising performances against mediocre opposition, but admittedly on the biggest platform there is. Suddenly the bidding might start at £50m for an asset we might have lost for less than £30m only a few weeks ago.

Keep your beak out Mahrez!

I think Maguire has done more than just had a few promising performances for England. He has stepped up on the biggest stage there is and has been arguably England’s player of the tournament.

Given his lack of experience at international level, that is a huge achievement at any tournament. I take your point on the opposition but he has been up against Falcao and Modric and will face a decent Belgium side on Saturday. It’s still international standard

He’s been superb at this World Cup and has lead from back, scoring a critical goal in a WC quarter final. It’s ahown that he can step up to top level and that might be what convinces the big boys that he’s ready

He will never be a Robert Huth. He’s a ball playing centre half who will always step out and push higher up the pitch. Some fans will hate that but as part of a back 3 at a big club he will fit in just fine

Well we were the best defence in that time so....

Can't really argue against that.

This came up before and think it was proved you didn't actually have the best defence after VVD signed. 2nd or 3rd best I think. Big improvement, mind.

I remember seeing something about us having the best defence during the last 29 games of the season.

BS,

No doubt Maguire seems to have grown during the tournament, but even if we’d played Brazil, France, Spain and Argentina it wouldn’t detract from the point I think I was trying to make.

We’re making an assessment of performance over 6 games against evidence over a whole season. In those six games he might have added £20m on his value - good for us if purely from a financial perspective.

I do agree that if he played for a high possession team like Man City he’d fit right in. A fact, I also agree, people often miss.

I hope that he stays and the discussion becomes redundant.

Come in then tell me why all of a sudden he is one if the best in the world?
The guy at 27 has 19 caps for his country who are currently the worst they have been in about 50 yrs
He has been in Scotland's team of the yr twice and was Southampton player of the yr once
He slightly improved your backline yes however it couldn't get much worse and you hardly looked overly solid. Hell you let in 9 goals in 3 games in semi final and final of CL. Sorry but can't see how all of a sudden vvd is now considered as one of the worlds best
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cant argue with this.

You can’t be considered world’s best after half a season playing CL football for the 4th best team in England.

He’s a good centre half, no doubt, but do people realise what they’re writing when they say “world’s best”...

I’d instantly put Godín, Hummels, Ramos, Toby, Vertonghen, Bonucci, Varane, Koulibaly & Azpilcueta above him, and that’s taken 30 seconds to figure out.

Unless a world’s best now means around 15-20th best in the world, which would mean there’s around 200 world-best players across all positions!

Why don't you keep quoting it wrongly?

Azpilcueta The fullback? who looked good playing in a back 3 with a world class keeper and DM infront of him?

Bonucci - Looked great playing in the best side in Italy, with all the best players? till he moved to AC and struggled!

Toby - Good player, was let go by A Madrid cos he wasn’t needed. played under poch in both Saints and Spurs with good defensive midfielders infront.

Van Dijk - comes into a side conceding goals left right and centre with a goal keepers that could’nt catch the clap in a hoe house.

according to most people a partner that’s one of the worst centre backs about.

A pair of fullbacks that 1 was playing his first season in top flight football and the other was stacking shelves 5 years ago.

throw in the fact that liverpool’s football style was to play all out attacking football with no recognised DM in front of the back line.

Why did liverpool have the second best defence from him joining with all those terrible players?

it’s baffling!
