My problem with him is that he dropped too deep and too narrow in earlier games, positions where we had too many cooks spoiling the broth.
Not a great tournament, but a certain starter in the short term.
Just read the words and ignore the graphs and stuff if you can't get your head around it
Good year at Liverpool and a good one at City.
Anonymous in an England shirt.
That's his career in a nutshell.
2 good seasons in 2 of the most attacking sides we have seen on these shores.
Sterling is a pretty limited goal scorer. If given a fluid role in a team that is creative he is incredible. In terms of creating his own goals he really struggles at this, the types of goals he score are always by a result of good movement and supply. Which is why Southgate’s tactics were so bad because we were only creating for attacking situations he doesn’t excel at.
Put him into Liverpool’s system in the Salah role and he will be awesome; put him in Utds system at RW and he will be pretty useless.
The article was an easy read though, don’t get the complaints
very good at stretching defences but pretty average to poor with the ball at his feet. He is also very greedy for someone with terrible end product considering the talent he plays with

I can see where you're coming from. I think this applies to a fair few goal scorers though, it's always better to play in a more attacking, creative team, all else being equal. Plus he's a factor in the team being attacking and creative

You just get the feeling it is not quite there with him.
By the article he is fantastic at finishing off easy chances put on a plate for him. Which is not to be sniffed at.
I always get the impression he gets panicked when there is a decision to make in the box though.

True, I just think he is someone whose skills aren’t as transferable throughout different systems as others. I would say Dele, Salah and Ozil are players who fall in the same category. Whereas the likes of Hazard or Mane could literally excel at any team.
It’s not really a criticism though, if as a winger you can contribute 15+ goals and 10+ assists in a team built with an attacking philosophy then you are worth your weight in gold.
The large white space between the last paragraph and the comment sections annoys me. It's unnecessary.

Load of bollox. His movement and anticipation in the final third are exceptional, and largely why he scored so many goals last season. Why he hasn’t really shone for England this World Cup - we’ve played to our strengths and used set pieces rather than try to work it into the box.
His finishing isn’t there yet, the derby at home should have been wrapped up by HT if he and Gundogan has taken their chances, for example. But he’s not just another nippy English winger with no end product, and if you look at his goals from last season (30 secs of your time) you’ll see It’s not 20 goals of him lurking at the back post for a tap in.

The article also demonstrates that it's a skill in itself to be on the end of so many clear cut chances. Otherwise, why are the likes of Sane and Bernardo Silva not doing the same? It also shows that, among the top scorers per 90 in the league last season, he was the 2nd most creative behind Coutinho, and along Salah as the best dribbler. So there's clearly a lot to his game
Why does sandy card more about kane winning next season's golden boot than Spurs achieving any tangible success?

You cannot just break it down with stats. He is undoubtedly a good dribbler, but there is no context to where he made them. What he did after he made them etc.
Creatively, he plays for City who will open teams up more. But what of the chances he creates? Are they ones he genuinely crafts? Are they laid off when he doesn't have too many options to worry about?
Is this season a trend or an outlier?
You can only go on what you see, and I do find him a little frustrating to watch, mainly because he does have the talent.
