What about the other issues he has alluded to?

What about this pack mentality in which he is trying to highlight that a country who pretend to be so diverse have loved referring to him as a Turk/immigrant with worrying frequency?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
him and gündogan took a picture of themselves with a man who has called for turks in germany to have at least five children so that they can take over germany at some point. a man who has jailed german journalists.
they then posted it to social media, one of them used the caption "my president". özil then goes on and on about how this is his heritage and why that somehow makes it ok.

how can they then be surprised, that people have doubts about how german they are after all of this? when they support everything germany stands against?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
He said it wasnt a political statement. That is what Gündogan said to the media. Obviously the media felt more behind it and gave it large to Özil when Germany failed. Coincidence?

And what do you assume when he took the picture with Erdogan?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yeah it clearly was a political statement though wasn't it

you can't just say it wasn't, that is now how it works.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you dont believe Gündogan either

I would be interested to hear from Arsenal fans on perceived racism towards Ozil.

Didn't see your article when I was writing mine. I have commented on yours. Cheers.

Ozil said "When we win I'm German and when we lose I'm Turkish."

One can make a comparison with Andy Murray i.e. when he wins he's British, and when he loses he's Scottish e.t.c

Not quite sure where to go with this one though!

I'd say he's more invisible when they lose, than anything else.

I'm kind of walking on broken glass with this one but hear me out...

Is there an issue with Turkish immigrants not integrating with German culture and instead forcing their own culture on others?

There is a lot of bad feeling towards Arabs in France and perhaps this is a similar issue there. There is no justification for racism but having lived abroad where people don't speak much English and the culture was different I did what I could to learn the language and adapt to the culture.

By the way my previous comment is not about Mesut Ozil not adapting!

He's a daft sod for making this a race issue when it clearly isnt. cant handle critisism. blokes a clown.

Exactly my point!

It's really sad that a player of his stature felt could not continue at international level because of racism?

As an ex-player, I respect his decision and unlike Hoeness, the ex-Bayern player, Ozil is not weak to stand up against racism

Well done Ozil.

"
The popular tabloid Bild said despite Ozil's appeals for respect for the highest office of his family's country, he "ignores that Erdogan stands against the values of his German and Turkish homelands".
It noted the footballer failed to mention in his "yammer Facebook post" that Erdogan is "transforming the freedom-loving, religiously moderate Turkey into an Islamist dictatorship" and "has almost extinguished free media and freedom of expression".
Frankfurter Allgemeine argued Ozil's resignation has left behind a "pile of shards", adding his "sweeping blow" will immerse the German FA in crisis.
"In many ways, Ozil has overshot the target," the daily said, describing Ozil's attacks on the media as "absurd" and "outrageous".
Die Welt commented that the commitment in wearing a German football shirt means "more than a good game".
"National players are role models, especially for young people with migration background," it said.
"Germany has to formulate its expectations clearly, and every athlete wandering between cultures has to decide whether he can or wants to do that. Those who accept the German passport and put on the national jersey must know what that means for them. The Ozil case made that clear," the paper added.
"

no way a paper in the UK would be able to express those views, and I don't think there's any way the general population would accept them

I know nothing about german culture, but the fact that a leading newspaper in the country can publish views like those today - which i'd say would have looked out of place in the UK for example 15 years ago - indicates that it is a society that is a long way from the UK in terms of accepting racial diversity.

Some of you seem to be basing your arguments on the idea that the backlash over this photo is the first instance of racism he has experienced as a German with Turkish background. I'd venture that isn't exactly the case...

is that the point ?

maybe he thinks he won't get selected anyway.

maybe he thinks he doesn't want to play for other reasons (such as the manager).

whether that's the case or not, the racist abuse he claims to have received is clearly completely unacceptable, and he thinks that this is the best way for him to raise the issue, then fair play to him.

the issue doesn't strike me as being about arguing over what the real reasons for his resignation are (probably not many people give a ts0s about that), they strike me as being that the player has (claimed to have) received abuse and threats from 'fans', and also that those abuse and threats have been racially motivated. clearly this is not an acceptable situation, and it needs attention.

Hoeness hasn’t exactly helped matters. Yes Ozil was crap during the World Cup (and maybe well before that, I don’t know), but the aside from Khedira who was appalling, Germany’s worst players at the World Cup played for Bayern (Muller, Boateng and Hummels).

The fact that I’m not a fan of Ozil or arsenal is irrelevant, it’s a shame he’s been made to feel the way he does.

I don't think it's because he has a Turkish background, I think it's a backlash on muslims in Germany as a whole. Because of their behaviour in Germany the indigenous population have had enough.

The business with Erdogan is the main driver here, surely?

Many of those that dismiss this would be outraged if a group of dual national England footballers were having photographs taken with Donald Trump, or Ariel Sharon, and one called them 'my President'

I doubt that very much. There is an active campaign Europe wide to move the population further right. Its coming from Russia with a few allies in the US.

Of course Ozil was very naive agreeing to the meeting with a dictator. I am sure some marketing twonk probably suggested it would boost his sales in Turkey. But to suggest that a photo op is a root cause of singling him out is a massive red herring.

Its obvious that Ozil was targeted and when he called out the racism for what it was, the bigots ran for cover as they almost always do behind some social political reason to justify their otherwise illogical feelings.

It is the driver of this particular set of circumstances for sure.

Cuddling up to a brutal dictator of another country, Germany crashing out, plus Ozil's usual disappearing act in football matches.

He has been made the scapegoat, but it is only what we see every year in the PL. We have no anti Turk agenda, we just see how little value he is
