Jose could handpick any player from around the world and he still wouln't finish above Pep's City.

For me, it's clear that Pep and even Klopp has a better grasp of the modern game than Jose. Jose simply has evolved with the game

Mourinho's principal strength used to be deflecting attention away from his players, creating a small, highly-committed team around his ideas.

Then he went to Madrid. Whatever went on there changed him. He got lucky with Chelsea initially when he returned, as if familiar ground rejuvenated him- and he was fortunate to have some of his old faithful players still there from his first time around. Then things went sour.

Now he blames players, among others. Building a team around charisma is fine, but that charisma seems long gone.

To be fair, Jose could legitimately point to £500k a week of talent missing from the pitch.

I think Mourinho became a bit of a myth which itself contributed to his ongoing success. Always feel he was a bit overrated and now the myth is dying he's struggling a bit more.

Before anyone bites my head off, I believe Klopp benefits from this as well.

I agree insofar as self-mythologising helped him, but he was a genuinely good man-manager and tactician back in the day. For all some people have called him a chequebook manager, he got both Porto and Inter punching well above their weight, dragging miraculous performances out of players like Eto'o and Drogba.

However, I think you're right in that his ego has eaten itself and he simply couldn't take the affront of coming up against equally strong egos in the likes of Ramos. As you no-doubt heard the other day with his comments about Klopp, Ramos doesn't exactly hold back. That, plus fighting the unfightable in prime-era Barcelona, finished Mourinho off and he's now running on fumes desperately trying to claw-back the respect and success he had half dozen years ago and more.
