The inverted fullback/Kovacic's importance

Was the smart way to incorporate Alonso. He doesn't have the pace to get up and down playing in a back four + why not utilize his technical quality on the ball in central positions if we're controlling the game? Also provides an additional, and necessary, goal threat in a midfield containing Jorginho, Kante & Kovacic.

I don't expect him to nail down his place because with Hazard who likes to cut in we do lack width at times, which will be where Emerson comes in. But it's a great option to have in the squad, great balance in that position

Pep has been doing this since his Bayern days with Lahm and Alaba, Delph and Zinchenko did this for him last season, as did Walker.

If the trend starts it’s because of Pep not us.

Pep puts them into midfield for more control, Alonso basically acts like Lampard.

Zinchenko and Alaba both did similar things in terms of playing centrally high up the pitch.

Principles are the same imo, but Alonso is a bigger goal threat. He was doing the same from WB last year too

Yeah not a new thing. But i like it. Also alonso is class always has been its funny to see the fifa fanboys who previously mocked him cuz hes not 99 pace backtracking

Wonderful footballer

Saw Sarri saying the other day that we need to make ourselves less open to the counter by only one full back attacking at once. I think this means a season of azpilicueta basically playing the position he did last year and Alonso playing as a third attacker with hazard and Pedro. Something that should suit both players qualities

Not to completely poo-poo the article but a fullback cutting inside doesn’t mean they are playing as an inverted fullback. An inverted fullback is one who plays as a midfielder not through inside runs.

No name ignore that smarmy khunt edin

Hes always lurking about on decent articles like this

Good article no name. Funny how alonso ends up as our furthest up player and at cf at times.

Said about a year ago we should give him a run up top. Best defender in the air in the PL for me so would thrive on crosses.

Great player and agree that kovacic is helping massively in covering and sitting in and also seems to have a high energy to cover the pitch when we bomb forward.

I have to disagree re striker Nick, the whole beauty of what Alonso is doing is that he basically creates a further overload while we are attacking, that would instantly disappear if he plays up front.

Take the winner vs Arsenal, the CB's were marking Giroud and just simply weren't ready for Alonso's late run.

Was more said in jest geez. But he would be more use than Morata for me!

Still feel Morata doesn't get much service and just feeds off scraps.

He played well vs Arsenal
Couldn't do much vs Huddersfield and Newcastle who had 10 behind the ball and sat so deep.
He wasn't effective vs Bournemouth and Giroud was a threat when he came on.

Did you watch last season? I think he missed most one on ones in a PL season. Just against arsenal in 3 games he had 7 or 8 one on ones.

He was average against arsenal imo but took his goal very well tbf to him.

Huddersfield and Newcastle he didn't even try and get involved for me, Giroud has done more in his 10 min cameos (see newcastle and bournemouth).

Infact I feel we could be at risk of losing giroud, if he sees morata keep starting infront of him he must wonder what he has to do.

He's better in the air, better on the floor, better link up, and arguably as good a finisher.

I don't think Giroud actually cares now the World Cup's over.

I like him so i don't mean this as harshly as it's going to sound but i think we are the best he can do at this stage, even going back to Arsenal he would be third choice.

he shouldn't be imo. If given a run I reckon he could do some damage (similar to end of last season) Goal in the semi final etc.

I was referring to this season, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt for last season (adjusting to the league, first time being a 1st choice front man)

He was better vs Arsenal as he could get in behind their defence.

If you look at his goals last season it was because Azpi was crossing the ball in for him, this seems to have stopped happening

posted on 5/9/18

Exactly so last year he was just relying on azpi. I think my player ratings I only gave morata a 6 against arsenal, thought he was our poorest forward player.

Giroud is a better super sub, if only he was more mobile.

I feel we should cross the ball in more as a team, we do a lot of passing around. Even Costa struggled for Spain a couple of years ago when they just kept passing it about

posted on 5/9/18

I agree with that point, but morata when we do is nowhere near it, or alonso or rb will throw in a terrible cross.

Bournemouth Azpi crossed it probably 7 or 8 times, all were low and all cut out. Was pretty poor.

Other than that I still feel morata needs to work more and get himself involved in the game. He doesn't do enough and his finishing with his feet is poor.

Agree, he's got some terrible finishing with his feet, surprised he tucked in the one vs Arsenal.

Yes, a lot of the scoring does seem to be low crossing which rarely beats the 1st man.

Morata definitely needs to improve his hold up play, link up and making space for other players like Giroud can.

Kind of agree with this. We have struggled to create goal scoring chances in the last 2 games. We’re moving the ball too slow in midfield. Can’t be doing that against bus parking teams.

Will be a similar game vs Cardiff soon.

I think this is the quickest we have moved the ball in nearly a decade lol
